Montclair, NJ - For the three-time CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) women's soccer champions, the John Jay Bloodhounds, the 2022 season came to a close on Saturday, falling to the No. 3 ranked and defending NCAA champions, Christopher Newport, 6-0, in the First Round on Saturday afternoon.
John Jay finishes their outstanding season with a 12-3-2 overall mark while going a perfect 5-0 in conference matches under now two-time CUNYAC Coach of the Year,
Ajani Clunie.
"From top to bottom, I am proud of our team's effort that they displayed throughout the year," commented Clunie. "From the first practice to today's result, the players and the staff had the willingness and tenacity to buy into what we wanted to achieve. We gave the defending champions a run today. I am extremely thankful, again to all the players, the seniors, the coaches, the administrators for their support. I am ecstatic about the direction our program is trending towards."
Christopher Newport will take on Montclair State in the next round of the tournament after Montclair State defeated Lynchburg, 1-0, in the second semifinal.
The Bloodhounds were up to the task in the earlier portion of the match, as
Alexa Pyatsky was able to turn away three scoring chances in the first 11 minutes of the contest.
The Captains were able to strike first in the 21st minute as Emily Talotta blasted that Pyatsky stopped, but located the loose ball and pushed it to the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
Christopher Newport scored twice over a four minute span in building a 3-0 lead. In the 58', Pyatsky came up with another stop but the Captains continued to pressure the Bloodhounds, as they scored in the 60' to up their lead to four.
In the 64th minute, a penalty kick was awarded to Christopher Newport. Molly Beegie stepped up and rocketed the attempt but Pyatsky was guessed right, denying the chance.
The ball, however, ricocheted back in favor of the Captains as Beegle was able to net the fifth goal of the contest. In the 79th minute, Christopher Newport added a sixth score by Abby Pogreba to seal the win.
