FLEMINGTON, NJ -- The baseball team hosted Yeshiva University for its 2022 home opener at Diamond Nation Park on Sunday afternoon, but lost both ends of the doubleheader. The Maccabees came back from behind in the final inning to steal game one, 5-4, and wound up winning game two, 7-3. John Jay falls to 0-3 on the season, while Yeshiva improves to 2-1 on the year.
The Bloodhounds struck first in game one, scratching across a run when freshman
Ethan Simaan was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first inning. After two more runs came into score on an error in the bottom of the second, freshman
Robert Burgos gave John Jay a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to left. The Maccabees rallied for three runs in the fifth, than took the lead with two runs in the seventh, and were able to hold on for the win.
Yeshiva rode the momentum of game one into game two, and got out to a 4-0 lead by the end of the top half of the third inning. The Bloodhounds cut the deficit to 5-3 after an RBI groundout from freshman
Michael Mauro and an RBI single from Simaan, but that was it for John Jay. The Maccabees held on to win game two as well.
Sophomore
Ismael Tatis started game one for John Jay and went 4.2 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits and striking out five. Freshman
Juan Maldonado started game two and hurled two innings and allowed four earned runs.
The Bloodhounds will have another opportunity for their first win of the season on Thursday, March 3 when they host Mount Saint Vincent at Kean University. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
