Softball Advances to Winners Bracket of CUNYAC Championship with Victory over Baruch on Day One of the Tournament

BROOKLYN, NY -- The #2 softball team took on #3 Baruch on day one of the CUNYAC Championship hosted at Brooklyn College at BC Field. The Bloodhounds advanced to the winners bracket of the tournament after defeating the Bearcats, 11-3, in five innings on Friday afternoon. John Jay improves to 16-19 on the season, while Baruch falls to 21-16 on the year.

Freshman Angelina Schoelles got the Bloodhounds on the board with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. Baruch answered with two runs in the top of the third, however, to even thing up at 2-2. The Bearcats took the lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single, but John Jay broke things open in the bottom of the frame. The Bloodhounds rallied for seven runs, highlighted by two-RBI base hits from freshmen Maleea Gallaspy and Mackenzie Tresch, to take a 9-3 lead. John Jay would close out the game in the bottom of the fifth after a sacrifice fly from Gallaspy and a walk-off RBI double from freshman Rylea Sandel.

Sophomore America Rivera started the game and went four innings allowing just two earned runs. Junior Julianne Graepel closed things out with a perfect fifth inning. Sandel and Gallaspy both had three hits in the game. Tresch and sophomore Summer Parks both went 1-3 with a stolen base.

John Jay will face top seeded Hunter College tomorrow at 1:15 pm
