BROOKLYN, NY -- The #2 softball team took on #3 Baruch on day one of the CUNYAC Championship hosted at Brooklyn College at BC Field. The Bloodhounds advanced to the winners bracket of the tournament after defeating the Bearcats, 11-3, in five innings on Friday afternoon. John Jay improves to 16-19 on the season, while Baruch falls to 21-16 on the year.
Freshman
Angelina Schoelles got the Bloodhounds on the board with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. Baruch answered with two runs in the top of the third, however, to even thing up at 2-2. The Bearcats took the lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single, but John Jay broke things open in the bottom of the frame. The Bloodhounds rallied for seven runs, highlighted by two-RBI base hits from freshmen
Maleea Gallaspy and
Mackenzie Tresch, to take a 9-3 lead. John Jay would close out the game in the bottom of the fifth after a sacrifice fly from Gallaspy and a walk-off RBI double from freshman
Rylea Sandel.
Sophomore
America Rivera started the game and went four innings allowing just two earned runs. Junior
Julianne Graepel closed things out with a perfect fifth inning. Sandel and Gallaspy both had three hits in the game. Tresch and sophomore
Summer Parks both went 1-3 with a stolen base.
John Jay will face top seeded Hunter College tomorrow at 1:15 pm
