Women's Soccer's Bid For A Fourth-Straight CUNYAC Title Falls Short On Saturday

Flushing, NY - A bid for a fourth-straight CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) tournament championship came up short for the John Jay women's soccer team as the Bloodhounds fell 4-2 to top-seed CCNY in Saturday's championship match.

Saturday's outcome halted a streak of three straight conference tournament titles for the Bloodhounds, which was the longest such streak for a CUNYAC team since former league members, Staten Island, won four straight from 2015 to 2018.

John Jay finished the 2023 campaign with an 8-6 overall record a 4-1 record during league matches. The Beavers, who earned the league's automatic bid, moved to 10-5 and concluded the year 5-0 in conference games.

The Beavers struck five minutes into the match as Mackenzie Moreno got the feed from Samantha Pinto and booted a shot past John Jay's Lily Velo to give CCNY the early advantage.

CCNY nearly added to their lead five minutes later as Moreno delivered a shot, but this time, Velo was there for the stop.

The match remained that way until the 34' minute, when Charlotte Foberg found the back of the net off the pass from Lennon Leithauser as the Beavers extended their lead to 2-0.

The Bloodhounds shifted the momentum despite tackling a two-goal deficit.

With 23 seconds left before halftime, Emma Fisher fired off a shot from the left side that was denied by CCNY's Amelia Cataldo.

Nora O'Connor, the newly-minted CUNYAC Player of the Year, located the loose ball and buried the chance, cutting into the Beavers' lead.

For O'Connor, it marked her 21st goal of the season while Fisher was credited with her second assist of the season.

Both teams traded off possession in the early stages of the second half until ten minutes into the stanza, CCNY created separation.

Foberg found Moreno for her second goal of the match that increased the Beavers' lead to 3-1 in the 55'.

Two minutes later, following a second throw-in, O'Connor had a chance from atop of the box, but her strike hit the crossbar and trickled out of play.

The Bloodhounds continued to work in cutting down the CCNY lead, but the Beavers pushed ahead by three as Karen Pineda converted off the feed from Laura Villatoro making it 4-1.

Deep in the Beavers zone, O'Connor stepped in front of the pass and blasted a shot that beat Cataldo for the second time in the match, trimming the CCNY lead in half.  With this goal, she pushed her season total to 22, the most goals scored in a single-season in John Jay women's soccer history.

With three minutes left in regulation, Lucia Giangaspero sent a low-left shot that Cataldo was able to turn aside.

For the match, John Jay took 11 shots while CCNY was credited with 12 as both teams had seven shots on target.
