Women's Basketball Falls In Non-Conference Finale At #RV Trinity College (CT) On Saturday

Hartford, CT - The John Jay women's basketball team fell to the #RV Trinity College (CT), 88-52, on Saturday in the final game of 2023. 
 
With the outcome, the Bloodhounds move to 6-6 on the season while the Bantam improves to 7-4. 
 
Two Bloodhounds finished in double figures, led by Chayanne Kelly, who tallied 21 points on 8 of 21 shooting. For Kelly, this marks the fifth time she has eclipsed the 20-point plateau and now has six games in netting 20 points or more.
 
Kamryn Hammond added ten points while going 6 of 6 from the free throw line. Both Hammond and Kelly each finished with a team-high five rebounds. 

Hannah Ruberto contributed nine points on 3 of 4 shooting while hitting on 3 of 3 from the line in her 20 minutes of action.  Ashley Zeolla and Tiffany Bogle each had six points to round out the scoring for the visiting Bloodhounds.
 
Two Trinity players scored in double digits, led by Olivia Vick, who tallied a game-high 23 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Vick converted on 7 of 10 from three-point range. Avery Marzo added 11 points in 19 minutes of play on 4 of 9 shooting from the floor. 

13 of the 18 Bantam players that played in the contest scored at least two points. Melissa Whitmore pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, six of which coming on the defensive glass. Maya Carnes netted seven points and dished out a team-best six assist in her 14 minutes of play. 

The Bantam opened the contest on a 9-0 run, capped by a driving layup from Theresa Twardosky. Hammond drilled a pair from the free-throw line for the first points of the contest for the Bloodhounds. Over the final 5:07 of the first quarter, Trinity closed out the stanza on an 18-6 run, holding the Bloodhounds to just 3 of 9 shooting while hitting on an 8 of 12 from the field, led by Avery Marzo, who tallied five points during the run as the Bantam led 27-10. 
 
Both struggled in the opening moments of the stanza until Hannah Marzo banked in a layup at the 7:51 mark to push the Bantam lead to 29-10. The Bloodhounds staged a 10-4 run over two minutes, shooting 3 of 3 from the field in trimming the deficit down to 13 following a layup from Hammond as John Jay trailed 33-20 at the 5:11 mark. 

The visitors capitalized on their free throw opportunities, as they hit on 6 of 6 during a 3:08 span that narrowed the gap to 34-22 after Kelly hit on a pair at the 4:05 mark. Trinity answered back by concluding the second quarter on a 12-2 run, holding the Bloodhounds without a field goal in two chances as the Bantam took a 46-24 halftime lead. 
 
John Jay opened the third quarter with back-to-back points from Hannah Ruberto and Zeolla before Emma Wax halted the mini Bloodhound run with a jumper of her own, making it 48-28 in favor of Trinity. The Bantam outscored the Bloodhounds, 19-11, over the final 6:44 of the third quarter, with Vick chipping in nine of the 19 points in helping Trinity extend their lead to 67-39. 

John Jay was held to just 5 of 13 shooting in the frame while Trinity converted on 8 of 16 from the field and 4 of 8 from three-point range which aided to the lead. 
 
Trinity continued to add to their lead opening the fourth quarter scoring 13 of the first 22 points in the frame, to push the lead to 80-48 following a driving layup from Vick.The Bantam finished the game scoring eight of the final 12 points in sealing the victory. 

John Jay was held to just 28.3 percent shooting from the field (17 of 60) while Trinity converted on 47.9 percent from the floor (35 of 73). The Bloodhounds made just one three-pointer while Trinity hit on 11 of 30 from the outside (36.7 percent). 

John Jay resumes CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play on Wednesday, January 3 as the Bloodhounds will host York at 6:00 p.m. from The Doghouse.
