Softball Falls In NCAA First Round Elimination Game To Manhattanville, 3-2, In Walk-Off Heartbreaker

Virginia Beach, VA - The 2023 CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Softball Champions, the John Jay Bloodhounds, saw their impressive season come to a close in walk-off fashion, falling to the Manhattanville College Valiants, 3-2, in Friday's NCAA First Round Elimination at Broyles Field on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University.
 
The Bloodhounds finished the 2023 campaign with an overall record of 26-17 while the Valiants moved to 39-6. 
 
Maleea Gallaspy, the 2023 CUNYAC Player of the Year, led the way for the Bloodhounds with three hits and an RBI while 2023 CUNYAC All-Star, Rylea Sandel, 2023 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Kelly Fajardo, Kayla Sauers, Sidney Bankston and Mackenzie Tresch each added a hit. Bankston drove in the Bloodhounds' second RBI of the game. 
 
Jailene Santiago, the 2023 CUNYAC Pitcher of the Year, was tagged with the loss, as she gave up the three runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out two batters as she finishes the year with a 22-8 overall record. 
 
Seven different Valiants recorded a hit with Samantha Reyer driving in two of the three runs. Sarah Harker delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Emily Mottoshiski earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking one. 
 
The two teams traded zeroes over the first three innings until the bottom of the fourth when the Valiants scored two runs. Amaya Esparza led off the frame with a single through the right side.
 
Santiago retired the next two batters before Esparaza moved into scoring position off the wild pitch. Juliana Parkes drew a walk to give the Valiants a pair of runners on for Reyer. She sent a hard-hit triple to right field that plated both runners as Manhattanville took the early lead. 
 
The Bloodhounds got cut the deficit in half in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Jordyn Prince walked and immediately stole second. The next batter, Gallaspy, singled up the middle and moved to third after Prince scored on the throwing error by the first baseman, as John Jay trailed 2-1. 
 
John Jay evened things out in the top of the sixth. Fajardo sent a two-out single to center field to commence the rally. Sauers added a single down the right field line that moved Fajardo to third. 
 
Bankston produced the third straight hit in the inning, singling back up the middle as Fajardo scored the tying-run, knotting the game at 2-2.
 
The Valiants narrowly pushed across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth but Santiago got Isabella Tansey to ground into the 5-4-3 double play. Parkes reached on a throwing error by Bankston at second but got Santiago got Reyer to pop out to Sandel at short, ending the threat. 
 
In the top of the seventh, Angelina Schoelles, a 2023 CUNYAC All-Star, reached first on an error by the Valiants second baseman but was stranded as Santiago grounded out to second, closing out the inning. 
 
In the last of the seventh, Melissa Lopez pinch-hit for Madison Gonzales and singled to left field before Gonzales re-entered and ran for Lopez. 
 
Back-to-back sacrifice bunts moved Gonzales to third before Harker came through for Manhattanville, singling through the left side as Gonzales scored. 
 
The 2023 softball team produced a few program highlights, as they led the entire NCAA Division III in team batting average (.387) while finishing second in the nation in total hits (463), third in the country in total runs, fourth in on-base percentage (.439) and fifth in scoring (7.80 runs per game).
