Baseball's Season Concludes In The CUNYAC First Round On Tuesday At Top-Seed CCNY

Bronx, NY -  The No. 4 seed John Jay baseball team rallied in their half of the second inning to tie the score at 1-1 at No. 1 seed and newly minted CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) regular season champions, CCNY.

The Beavers posted back-to-back four-run innings and capped the rally by scoring a total of six runs between the fifth and sixth as the Bloodhounds fell 15-3 in the CUNYAC First Round at Ohio Field on the campus of Bronx Community College on Tuesday.

With the loss, John Jay finishes the 2023 season at 3-38 and 1-11 in league play. CCNY, who improves to 14-18 overall, will take on the No. 3 seed Lehman, who defeated the No. 2 seed, Baruch, 7-4, for the CUNYAC Championship in a best-of-three series, beginning on Friday, May 12 at Maimonides Park.

Anthony Agosta led the way for the Bloodhounds with two hits and scored two of the three runs on the afternoon. Joseph Salerno and Saul Zoquier each produced an RBI in the contest. David Michalski, John Spallin, Ethan Simaan and J. Salerno all had a hit in contest.

Michael Mauro suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits in his 2.1 innings of work. Mauro walked six batters and retired two via the strikeout.

CCNY's by Jonathan Rivera completed the cycle going 5 for 5, scoring three runs and driving five RBIs in the victory. Ethan Angress and Stephen Suprun added three RBIs a piece with Angress collecting three hits.

James Dean Johnstone earned his sixth win of the season, going four innings in which, he allowed one run on two hits without walking a batter and striking out a game-high seven.

The Beavers got on the board first in the bottom of the first. John Creegan drew a one-out walk before Rivera singled up the middle, giving the home team runners on first and second. The next batter, Michael Chasanov, reached on a fielder's choice that brough in Creegan on an error Thomas Salerno at short, giving CCNY a 1-0 advantage.

The Bloodhounds evened things up at 1-1 in the top of the second. Agosta delivered a two-out double down the right field line. J. Salerno plated Agosta on an infield single to third, as Agosta slid underneath the tag by the catcher. John Jay threatened for more in the inning as Salerno stole second but was stranded as Tyler DeStefano was called out looking at strike three.

Following a scoreless top of the third, CCNY scored four times in the bottom of the frame off Mauro in building a 5-1 advantage. Rich Cirigliano led things off with a walk followed by an infield hit by Angress.

A sacrifice bunt from Creegan moved the runners over for Rivera, who connected on his second single of the game, this one to centerfield, bringing in both runners, making it 3-1.

Mauro walked the next three batters, as Suprun drew the bases loaded free pass to bring in the fourth run of the inning, ending Mauro's afternoon on the mound.

Sean Jost came on in relief and got Kevin Budzinski to ground one back to him, as Jost threw home, forcing Chasanov out at the plate for the second out of the inning. He walked Tyler DiBlasi as the Beavers went up 5-1.

CCNY added four more in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to eight, 9-1. Rivera checked off a triple to left center on his cycle quest, that brought in Angress, who led off with a single to left before moving to third on a misplay by Michael Manzoeillo in left.

Marc Weeks came on for Jost, and Chasanov greeted Weeks with a RBI sacrifice fly to right, bringing in Rivera. Alex Montanile laced a single down the left field line before Suprun connected on a two-run home run to right to cap off the four-run inning.

The Beavers continued to add on runs, scoring thrice in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Luongo came on for Weeks and gave up a single to DiBlasi, who promptly stole second.

Luongo struck out Cirigliano and got Angress to ground back to him on the mound. Luongo hit Creegan with a pitch to give CCNY runners on the corners for Rivera, who cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left field, as the lead swelled to 12-1.

CCNY added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth off of Michael Lonergan. He got Montanile to fly out to left before issuing a walk to Suprun. The next batter, Budzinski, flew out to right, for the second out.

Lonergan gave up a single to DiBlasi before Cirigliano reached on an error by the third baseman, that loaded the bases for Angress. Angress stepped in an emptied the bases with a triple to center field, as the Beavers went up 15-1.

The Bloodhounds plated across two runs in the top of the seventh. Simaan led off by reaching on an infield single to short. Agosta singled to left and moved to third after the left fielder misjudged the ball, that allowed Simaan to score from first.

With one out in the frame, Zoquier pinch-hit for DeStefano, and lofted a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home Agosta.

John Jay tried to stage some late magic as Michalski doubled to center field to start the visitor's half of the eighth inning. Mauro drew a walk but both were left on base as Jose Colon got Spallin to fly out to right, Manzoeillo to pop out to first and Mauro was caught stealing second.

Jason Rodriguez relieved Colon and struck out pinch-hitter Javier Simpson swinging and Agosta looking before walking J. Salerno. Zoquier stepped in and was set down swinging at strike three as the Beavers advanced to the championship game.
