Nora O'Connor's Hat Trick Propels Women's Soccer To Victory In Season Opener Over Old Westbury

New York, NY - The defending three-time CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) women's soccer champions, the John Jay College Bloodhounds, commenced the 2023 season with a 4-1 home victory against the Old Westbury Panthers at Randall's Island - Field 74 on Friday afternoon.

The Bloodhounds extended their win streak against the Panthers to three as the two teams met for the first time since the 2019 season at Old Westbury, a 5-2 road triumph for the Bloodhounds.

John Jay broke the scoreless stalemate in the 11' minute, as Mikayla Schoch blasted a shot inside the box that got past Old Westbury's Natalie Intrieri as the Bloodhounds took a 1-0 lead.

For Schoch, she was the tone setter, as the second-year forward bookened goals for the Bloodhounds, scoring what proved to be the game-winner in the CUNYAC Championship (1-0 victory over CCNY) last season, and now opening the new campaign with the first tally of the season.

The Bloodhounds offense continued to test Old Westbury's keeper, as in the 20th minute, newcomer Nora O'Connor rattled in a shot from the right side to push the John Jay advantage to 2-0.

Old Westbury climbed back into the contest, cutting the deficit in half in the 29' as Alyse Then scored her first goal of the season off a breakaway counter.

The two teams were held scoreless for the majority of the second half, until the 79' minute of the contest. Old Westbury was called for a foul inside the box as the Bloodhounds were awarded a penalty kick.

O'Connor stepped up and booted a low-liner to the bottom right of the goal that pushed the John Jay lead to two, 3-1.

The Alexandria, VA native finished the day with a final tally that gave her the hat trick and increased the Bloodhound advantage to 4-1.

John Jay held a commanding 19-2 edge in shots and 11-2 on shots on goal.

Newcomer Lily Velo earned the start in goal for the home team this afternoon, giving up the lone goal and making one stop. Her counterpart, Intrieri, stopped six shots.

The Bloodhounds will take their first road trip of the season, as they make the short commute into Brooklyn on Wednesday, September 6, as they will square off against St. Joseph's University - Brooklyn.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
