Box Score Union, NJ - The John Jay women's soccer team dropped its first meeting with Kean University since 2017, falling 1-2 on Saturday night.
Catarina Johnson scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the losing effort, with fellow freshman Lily Velo notched the most saves in a game (5) in her opening campaign.
The hosts struck in the opening ten minutes to kick off the scoring. Kean was able to build off a throw-in in the attacking third with Sophia Lang finding space from 35 yards out, placing a ball just out of reach of Velo for the opening tally.
The Cougars one-goal lead held through the first half. Velo racked up five saves on 14 shots in the first 45 minutes.
Kean picked up the scoring in the opening minutes of the second half as Lang played a well-placed ball in front of goal that found the head of Kaydence Oakley who doubled the Cougar advantage.
The Bloodhounds got on the board ten minutes later. Nora O'Connor won the ball in the final third off of a throw in and worked herself open for a cross into the 18-yard box. The ball was perfectly floated to Johnson, who battled for possession with the ball in the air and headed the ball directly over the head of the charging Kean keeper to cut the host lead in half.
The goal is Johnson's first as a Bloodhound.
John Jay would not allow another shot on goal in the contest but could not come up with the equalizer, falling 1-2.
NEXT UP: The Bloodhounds continue their road stretch on Sept. 23, traveling to New London to face Connecticut College. Kickoff from Freeman Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
