Women's Swimming Drops Tight Battle With Mount Saint Mary in Home Opener

New York, NY - The 2024-25 John Jay women's swimming team made its home debut on Wednesday night, hosting the Mount Saint Mary College (MSMC) Knights.

The Bloodhounds looked to bounce back from a competitive tri-meet with Ramapo and Kean to start the year with the first home meet at John Jay Pool.

John Jay drew within two points of the Knights in the final relay of the night but could not pull ahead for the victory.

The Bloodhounds started the night strong, improving on their 200y medley relay time from the season opener. The relay team of Rina Yamamoto, Miranda Perez, Luciana Uriarte and Victoria Hapsis took the first seven points of the meet with their 2:12.17 first-place time.

Grace Driver finished her 1000y freestyle race with a strong kick to hold off MSMC's Victoria Deluca for second place. Driver's time of 15:00.78 scored her team three points, with the Knights' Meghan Wurster taking first place and five points.

The Bloodhounds scored another second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle race as Gloria Glenn took a season-best time of 2:38.58. She added another three points to the count, but the Knights took a 15-13 lead for the meet with the first-place finish.

John Jay's resident speedster, Miranda Perez, gave the team its first individual win of the night. Perez improved on her first race of the season, taking first place with a 25.84 time and giving the Bloodhounds five points.

Hapsis salvaged a point for her team in the next race, taking third in the 200y individual medley with a 2:40.29 time.

In the next sprint race, Uriarte took second with a season-best 1:16.26 in the 100y butterfly. She trailed MSMC's Meghan Wurster by less than two seconds and earned the Bloodhounds another three points.

The Knights' lead extended to double digits as visitors took first and third in the 100y freestyle race. Hapsis scored second place and three points with a 1:03.90 time.

John Jay got back in the win column in the 100y backstroke race, as Yamamoto improved on her first meet time and took first with a 1:21.61 finish. The Bloodhounds earned six points in the race, with Driver taking third place in 1:28.22.

Driver contributed to the point total again in the final distance race of the night, taking second place with a 7:33.55 time in the 500y freestyle. Her three points maintained the deficit at ten points headed into the final two races of the night.

Speed helped cut into the Knights' lead in the 100y breaststroke race, as Perez finished nearly nine seconds clear of the pack. Her 1:14.50 time earned the Bloodhounds five points, with MSMC taking four points with second and third-place finishes.

It was down to the final relay race of the night, as Yamamoto, Katherine Sacgalindo, Gloria Glenn and Uriarte took to the starting blocks for the 200y freestyle relay. Uriarte's dominant anchor leg ensured victory for the Bloodhounds, taking first place with a 2:10.59 finish.

The relay win earned the Bloodhounds seven points and cut the Knights' lead to just two points after the final event.

NEXT UP: The Bloodhound swimmers continue the home stand on Tuesday, Nov. 5 as John Jay hosts Purchase College. The dual meet is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. at the John Jay Pool.
