Brooklyn, NY - The No. 5 seed John Jay College men's soccer team battled for 110 minutes with the No. 4 seed Brooklyn College Bulldogs in the CUNYAC First Round on Wednesday evening.
With both teams concluding regulation knotted at 0-0,
the two teams were pitted in penalty kicks. Junior Guaman made the first attempt for the Bloodhounds before Bradlej Cupi evened the set at 1-1.
Brayan Alvarez stepped up and misfired on his attempt. The Bulldogs' Adan Khodorkovsky pushed the Brooklyn lead to 2-1 before
Andrew Santos emphatically tied the attempts at 2-2.
Yasin Elsammak stepped and pushed one that deflected off
Davio Rossi-Levin's fingers into the back of the net, pushing the lead to 3-2. John Jay's
Maksym Ivanov's attempt was denied by Juan Carlos Solis.
Eduardo Jeronimo sealed the victory for the Bulldogs, 4-2.
John Jay finishes the year at 3-10-3 and 2-3-1 in CUNYAC play.
Brooklyn, who now stands at 6-9-1 and 4-2-1 in league play. They advance to the CUNYAC semifinals to play the top-seed Lehman College.
The Bloodhounds attempted 15 shots on the night
with four reaching their way on goal while the Bulldogs sent 17 shots and five on target.
John Jay had a chance thirty seconds into the contest as
Marcel Tovar booted one to the right. Khodorkovsky challenged Rossi-Levin early, but the first-year netminder was able to make the stop.
The Paris, France goalkeeper made a diving stop in the 19' to keep the match deadlocked at nil. Brooklyn's Brian Perea made two crucial stops on Santos and Alvarez's chances, three minutes apart.
In the 27',
Karl Menuau sent a rising shot to the top left of the goal
but Perea thwarted the chance, keeping the match tied.
When play resumed for the second half,
Sebastian Leja sent a shot attempt that sailed high over the goal in the 56'.
The Bloodhounds continued to establish chances, as in the 73',
Charlie Metz found space after outworking his defender and sent a shot high over the goal. In the waning moments of regulation, Ivanov sent a low-lining attempt
but Perea was there for the stop.
Brooklyn's George Koufos, who netted a hat-trick the last time these two teams square off, nearly got the game-winner
but Rossilevin was there for the stop, sending the match into overtime.
In the first overtime, Brooklyn attempted the first shot of the extra period, as Benedick Augustin sent one high. On the ensuing Bloodhound possession, Ivanov created another chance but misfired on his attempt in the 95'.
With just nine second seconds, the Bloodhounds played the ball the found the foot of Alvarez, but he couldn't navigate one past Perea as the two teams headed for another ten minutes.
In the 103', Koufos again found space on the right side but couldn't send the shot on target as both teams headed for penalty kicks to determine a winner.
The Bloodhounds finish the year ranked 50th in the country in saves per game, averaging 6.13 per contest out of 407 teams ranked. Rossi-Levin finishes his first season ranked second overall in the conference in save percentage at .787.
