New York, NY - John Jay College Director of Athletics Cat Alves announced the addition of Angie Nieves as the new Bloodhounds' head softball coach.
"We are excited to welcome Angie to the John Jay community as our new head softball coach," said Alves. "Coach Nieves comes to us with an extensive background as a former Division I and Pro-Softball player and having successful coaching stints at several Division II and Division III institutions, including Rutgers-Newark, Felician, and Manhattanville. Her passion for the game and experience make her an exceptional fit for our program. We are confident that our softball program will continue to excel under her leadership."
Nieves spent the last two seasons at Rutgers University Newark as the assistant coach.
"I am extremely honored to have been chosen to lead the John Jay softball team," said Nieves. "I want to thank Cat Alves, Brandon Fieland, the selection committee, and the John Jay community for their belief in me and their commitment to the success of the John Jay softball program."
In addition to her role as an assistant coach at Rutgers-Newark, Nieves is a personal trainer in New York/New Jersey, where she is a defense and hitting instructor.
"Coach Nieves' commitment to developing student-athletes makes her an ideal fit for our softball program," commented Deputy Director of Athletics Brandon Fieland. "We are confident she will lead our team to new heights and continue to build on the foundation of excellence here at John Jay."
Nieves had a pair of stints at Felician University, first serving as a volunteer assistant in 2018 before being elevated to assistant coach in 2019. In between, Nieves was also the head softball coach at Marymount High School.
She started her college coaching tenure as an assistant at Manhattanville University in 2017, where she primarily worked with the infield as well as coordinating practice plans, scouting reports, fundraisers, and other daily tasks. Nieves has also worked with several New Jersey travel programs, most recently the NJ Pride U18.Â
She embarked on a collegiate softball career, first at Iona College, before transferring to Fairleigh Dickinson University. As a member of the Knights' softball team, she was part of the program that made their first-ever NEC Tournament appearance in program history.Â
Nieves played for Cangrejeras de Roosevelt, leading the team to their first Puerto Rico Softball Superior Nacional Championship and additionally, having the opportunity to play for her island of Puerto Rico at the ISF World Championships.
