Women's Soccer Blanks Brooklyn in CUNYAC Semifinals

New York, NY - The John Jay women's soccer team is headed back to the CUNYAC conference championship for the sixth consecutive season.

The top-seeded Bloodhounds posted a dominant performance against the four-seed Brooklyn College Bulldogs in the conference championship semifinal on Saturday afternoon, shutting out the visitors 6-0 in their final home match of the season.

Olivia Boucher eclipsed 20 goals for the season with a hat trick against Brooklyn.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Bloodhounds spent the majority of the first half in the attacking third, peppering the Bulldogs with six shots and five corners.

Brooklyn looked to seize on a number of counter-attack opportunities created by John Jay's offensive efforts, but the Bloodhounds' backline, anchored by co-captains Ellarose Bianca and Alexandria Nembhard, thwarted every chance.

The Bulldogs best chance came in the 28th minute after drawing a foul just outside the 18-yard box. Julissa Chino's bouncing free kick went directly to John Jay keeper Gianna Duarte, who corraled the attempt.

Duarte made two saves in the opening 45 minutes.

A
fter double-digit opportunities in the first half, the Bloodhounds finally struck in the final ten minutes. Surya Nero kickstarted a run from the midfield with a well-placed pass to Emma Fisher on the wing, who put Mikayla Schoch in position to beat the Brooklyn keeper and open the scoring.

S
choch's fifth tally of the season gave the Bloodhounds a 1-0 lead headed into halftime.

The physicality from both squads was evident throughout the match but changed the dynamic of the proceedings in the 54th minute. Both sides were down to 10 players after two red cards were administered following an altercation in the Bloodhounds' attacking third.

The John Jay attack took advantage of the extra space in the final 30 minutes, scoring five goals to close the game out.

Lucia Giangaspero played the Bloodhound's leading scorer open down the right wing and Boucher took advantage of the open real estate to score her first playoff goal for John Jay in the 64th minute.

Eleven minutes later, the Bloodhounds exploited the right side of the field again. This time, Emma Fisher played a pass to Nero in space and the transfer midfielder scored her second goal of the year to give John Jay a 3-0 lead.

Giangaspero played another expert pass less than two minutes later, as Fisher crashed the net and poked the ball past a sliding Brooklyn keeper to open the metaphorical floodgates for a 4-0 lead.

Despite wholesale changes to the lineup with the secure lead, John Jay continued to add to the scoreline. Boucher scored two goals in the final three minutes, the first assisted by Lillith Eaton, to clinch the hat trick. Her 20th and 21st goals of the season secured a 6-0 win for the Bloodhounds.

Gianna Duarte made three saves in 79 minutes of work, with Cailyn MacLellan finishing off the shutout in the final 11 minutes.

NEXT UP: The Bloodhounds advance to the CUNYAC Championship on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Queens College. They will face two-seed Lehman College at 12:00 p.m.
