Baseball Falls To St. Joseph's University - Long Island At Fordham On Wednesday Afternoon

Bronx, NY - The John Jay baseball team fell to the visiting St. Joseph's University - Long Island Golden Eagles, 15-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The visitors scored a run in eight of the nine innings as John Jay falls to 7-11 overall on the season while St. Joseph's University - Long Island improves to 9-7. 
 
Quentin Bowman, Axel Kappes III, Ryan Cherichella, and Hayden Tackett each had a hit for the home team. Bowman scored the lone run for the Bloodhounds. 
 
Alvy Grullon (1-2) gave up seven runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out in taking the loss in his second start of the season. 
 
John Lynch, Anselmo Joya each had three hits with two RBIs. Joe Thatcher and Scott Northrop each had two hits with Lynch, Derek Masino, and Dom Cream each added two RBIs. 
 
Riley Morris (2-0) earned his second victory of the season, tossing six innings in which he gave up a run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. 
 
The bullpen arms of CJ Rivera, Ryan Barlow, and Luke Gacovino combined for three scoreless innings, one hit, and four strikeouts. 
 
The Golden Bears got on the board first as Lynch started off the game with a double to left field before moving to third on a Joe Hackal ground out. The next batter, Masino, sent a hard-hit grounder to short that brought in Lynch for the game's first run. 
 
SJLI tacked on a second run in the top of the second. Northrop tripled down the right field line before coming into score on the sacrifice fly from Joya. 
 
In the third, Grullon got the first two outs of the frame before Hackal reached on a single to left center before stealing second. A walk to Masino gave the visitors a pair on base before executing a double steal. 
 
Cream singled and advanced to second as Hackal scored the third run and Masino, who advanced to third, came in on a throwing error by Hackett at short to make it 4-0. 
 
The Bloodhounds got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Bowman blasted a first-pitch, one-out double to left center. 
 
The next batter, Kappes III, singled to center, giving John Jay runners on the corner. John Spallin reached on a fielding error by the third baseman that allowed Bowman to cross the plate, making it 4-1. 
 
The Golden Eagles added two more in the top of the fourth, increasing their lead to 6-1 on a two-run double from Lynch. 
 
In the fifth, the Golden Eagles notched three more runs to up the lead to 9-1. Michael Luongo came on for Grullon and issued back-to-back singles to Northrop and Joya. Luongo was called for a balk that brought in Crema. 
 
Mike DiFilippo grounded out to short that plated Northrop to make it 8-1. A second balk was called on Luongo that scored Joya from third, extending the lead to 9-1. Luongo rebounded with back-to-back punch outs to end the inning. 
 
Lynch tripled to right center to start the sixth before being lifted for a pinch-runner. Masino flew out to right and brought in Thatcher to make it 10-1. 
 
The Bloodhounds tried to mount a comeback as Kappes III drew an eight-pitch walk and moved to second on a steal but was stranded. 
 
Joya singled home Northrop, extending the lead to 11-1 before a Thatcher double to right center increased the advantage. 
 
In the top of the eighth, Sojun Christie came on for Marc Weeks and got the double play to end the frame. 
 
The Golden Eagles tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth as Rob Page delivered a double to right center that brought in Jake Hall. Thatcher tripled to the deepest part of Houlihan Park, clearing the bases that moved the lead to 15-1. 
 
John Jay opens up CUNYAC play on Saturday, March 30 as they will travel to Valhalla, NY and Westchester Community College to square off against Baruch in a seven-inning doubleheader beginning at noon.
