BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONS! Softball Wins Three Straight Elimination Games Claiming Program's Third CUNYAC Championship

Brooklyn, NY - The John Jay softball team faced elimination to begin Day 2 of the 2024 CUNYAC Softball Championships, and at the end of the day, the Bloodhounds were the last team standing as they won the league title for the second straight season and third in program history.

With the three wins over the No. 3 seed Baruch and No. 2 seed Hunter, John Jay runs their record to 32-12 and will await their destination in this year's 2024 NCAA Division III Softball Championship, as the Selection Show is set for Monday, May 13 at 11:00 a.m.

No. 1 John Jay 2, No. 3 Baruch 1

The Bloodhounds trailed 1-0 after one before tying the score in the bottom of the third and producing the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth as the top-seeded John Jay eliminated the No. 3 seed, Baruch, 2-1, to open Day 2 of the CUNYAC Softball Championships.

Newly minted CUNYAC Player of the Year Jailene Santiago earned her 14th win of the season after logging her 15th complete game of the season and 27th of her John Jay career. The Albany, NY native allowed one run on seven hits while walking three and striking out seven batters.

Kelly Fajardo led the way with two hits while Elika Rodrigues, Rylea Sandel, Alyssa Cadolino, and Angelina Schoelles each had a hit with Cadolino and Ciaran Iglesias each driving in an RBI.

Leilani Jimenez and Carly Quint paced Baruch with two hits while Jimenez scored their lone run of the game.

Quint (9-10) went six innings, giving up the two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out a batter.

Santiago struck out Megan Bell for the first out before two straight hits from Jimenez and Quint gave the Bearcats a pair of runners on. Mia Faddah walked to load the bases before a wild pitch brought in Jimenez as Baruch took a 1-0 lead.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the third. Rodrigues worked a one-out walk before stealing second. With two-outs, Santiago was walked. Cadolino took the 2-0 pitch from Quint and singled back up the middle that brought in Rodrigues, tying the score at 1-1.

Schoelles led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left field. Kayla Sauers put down a well-executed sacrifice bunt, moving Schoelles into scoring position.
Fajardo came up with her second hit of the afternoon, a single to left that moved Schoelles to third. Iglesias reached on a fielder's choice that plated home the go-ahead run in Schoelles as John Jay took a 2-1 lead.

Baruch threatened to tie the score in the top of the sixth. Faddah started with a single before a walk was issued toe Milagros Arias. Julia Cuttone sent a sacrifice bunt up the first base line that moved both runners.

With the count at 2-2, Bridget Campanelli lined into an inning-ending double play as she sent a screamer to Jordyn Prince in left, who made a spectacular grab and alertly fired one to Sandel at second for the double play.

Grace Oscuh sent the first pitch she saw into left field. Amber Rivera grounded out to first base to most Osuch to second.

Santiago regained her composure inside the circle, striking out Bell for the second out. Jimenez singled to right as Baruch had runners on the corner but Quint lined out to Schoelles as John Jay moved on to face Hunter.

No. 1 John Jay 9, No. 2 Hunter 1 (Six Innings)

After falling to the No. 2 Hunter Hawks on Thursday afternoon in Day 1 of this year's championship, the Bloodhounds had a fast start, scoring a run in five of the six innings played as the Bloodhounds picked up a 9-1 victory, setting up a winner-take-all final for the championship.

Rylea Sandel went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Cadolino had three hits and an RBI. Sidney Bankston drove in a team-best three RBIs while Fajardo chipped in two RBIs.

Elizabeth Thompson went 2 for 2 while driving in the lone RBI for the Hawks. Olivia Palumbo, Paige Witalec, and Nicole Bowe all had a hit for the visitors.

Lindsay Ogden went the distance in picking up her 14th win of the season, as she allowed the one run on five hits while walking one and striking out six batters.

Brielle Staskavage took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Alyssa Curiale went two-thirds of an inning, giving up three runs on four hits. T'ea Panagakos also gave up three runs but on five hits over three innings of work.

Sandel reached on a double to left field before scoring on the RBI single from Cadolino.

In the Hunter second, Bowe reached on a single to center before Grace Basil moved her to second on the sacrifice bunt. With two out, Thompson sent a single up the middle, tying the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the second, Fajardo sent a ground-rule double to left field. Prince singled to right center, scoring Fajardo as John Jay regained the lead at 2-1.

Curiale came on for Staskavage and allowed Rodrigues to reach on a single up the middle for John Jay's third run. Sandel added a run-scoring single to left that extended the lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the third, Fajardo had the big hit in the frame, as she sent a one-out single through the left side, scoring Brianna Cornejo and Bankston, making it 6-1.

The Bloodhounds tacked on two more in the bottom of the fourth on the two-run double by Bankston to left as the lead swelled to 8-1.

The game remained that way until the bottom of the sixth. Sandel started the inning with a single through the left side. Santiago singled to left field.

With one out, Bankston reached on fielder's choice as Sandel scored the ninth run of the game for John Jay, thus setting the stage for a winner-take-all.

No. 1 John Jay 2, No. 2 Hunter 1

With the CUNYAC title waiting in the balance and a trip to the NCAA's on the line, both teams traded zeroes over the first three innings before the Hawks broke the stalemate in the fourth.

John Jay got the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth and held on for the 2-1 victory in securing their second straight CUNYAC championship and third in the history of the program.

Ogden went the distance in this one, giving up just one unearned run while allowing five hits and striking out four. The West Palm Beach, FL native earned CUNYAC MVP honors following the conclusion of the championship.

Cadolino, Bankston, and Prince each had two hits with Cadolino driving in the tying run while Bankston scored the go-ahead run.

Panagakos took the ball for the Hawks, going 5.1 while allowing two runs on eight hits. Curiale came on in relief, pitching two-thirds of an inning.

Sophia Perez led the way with two hits while Bowe drove in the lone RBI. She, Basil, and Thompson also had a hit in the contest.

Perez opened the first inning with a triple to left center. Samantha Marsala hit into a double play as Prince fired one to Maleea Gallaspy behind the plate, who then tossed it to Bankston for the out.

John Jay nearly got on the board in the bottom of the second as Cadolino and Bankston started the frame with a pair of hits before two runners were stranded.

Perez led off the Hunter fourth with a single to left and advanced to second on a misplay by Prince. With two outs, Bowe sent the first pitch she saw to center field that scored Perez, giving Hunter a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks glided into the bottom sixth with that score until the Bloodhounds rallied back. Sandel led off with a single before Santiago reached on a fielder's choice.
Cornejo ran for Santiago before Cadolino ripped a first-pitch triple to right center, tying the game at 1-1.
The next batter, Bankston, followed up with a triple down the left field line that scored Cadolino for the 2-1 advantage.

It proved to be all that Ogden needed as she needed just seven pitches to retire the Hawks as she got Basil swinging at strike three that propelled the Bloodhounds into the NCAA Tournament.
