CHAMPIONS! John Jay Baseball Wins First CUNYAC Title Since 2007; Sweeping Defending League Champions CCNY On Saturday

Brooklyn, NY - For the first time since the 2007 season, the John Jay baseball team is the top dog of CUNYAC as the Bloodhounds defeated the No. 1 seed, CCNY, 6-1 and 5-4. For the Bloodhounds, this marks their eighth title in program history as they finish the season 20-21 after winning just three games a season ago. CCNY finished the year 14-20.

Game 1 - No. 3 John Jay 6, No. 1 CCNY 1
The opener to the 2024 CUNYAC Baseball Championship was a showcase of pitchers stifling their opposition until John Jay staged a four-run sixth inning before adding two more in the eighth in taking game one by a 6-1 count. Alvy Grullon (3-3) was economical and efficient in his outing as he went seven innings in which he allowed just one run on seven hits while walking four and striking out four. David Michalski worked the final two innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Ryan Cherichella went 3 for 5 in the opener with a run scored while Anthony Agosta also collected three hits. Quentin Bowman finished 2 for 4, driving in two RBIsSanto Anzalone had a hit, two runs scored, and an RBI while Axel Kappes III also added an RBI for the victors in the opener.

CCNY's Michael Chasanov had three hits while Colin Souther drove in the lone RBI for the Beavers.
Brandon Paider (7-6) went 7.1 innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits while striking out six batters. Adrian Tang worked the final 1.2 innings, giving up a hit and recording a strikeout.

Both pitchers had traded zeroes until the top of the sixth inning. Newly minted CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Jaxen Gangwish was hit by a pitch. The next batter, Cherichella, took the first pitch he saw into left field for a single. John Spallin followed with a single through the left side that loaded the bases for AnzaloneAnzalone didn't waste time as he delivered a RBI single that scored Gangwish and alertly Cherichella scored on a throw that made it 2-0 in favor of John Jay.

Bowman sent an RBI single to right that plated home Spallin before Agosta doubled to left field as Anzalone tacked on the fourth run of the contest for the Bloodhounds. Grullon kept dealing on the mound, needing just six pitches to get out of the CCNY sixth inning.

The Bloodhounds added two more runs in the top of the eighth. Anzalone was hit by a pitch before moving to second on a single by Mauro. Bowman continued his hot approach at the plate, singling to right field that brought in Anzalone for a 5-0 lead. Kappes III reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Mauro to score from third as John Jay built a 6-0 run cushion.

Following a walk to Cirigliano, Michalski came on for Grullon. Cirigliano stole second before moving to third on the Chasanov infield single but was retired when Anzalone threw a strike from behind the plate for the first out of the inning.
Souther flew out to Bowman in center as Cirigliano scored, breaking the shutout as the Beavers trailed 6-1.

Michalski worked quickly to get three fly balls to give John Jay a 1-0 lead in the series.

Game 2 - No. 1 CCNY 4, No. 3 John Jay 5
In game two, CCNY came out with a run in the second and held the lead until the bottom of the seventh when John Jay unleashed a four-run inning. The Beavers trimmed the lead to one, 4-3, before the Bloodhounds got an insurance run, which proved to be beneficial as CCNY scored in the ninth but Mauro came and struck out Souther for his first save of the save giving the Bloodhounds their first title since 2007.

Anzalone had three hits, including a mammoth three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh as he finished with four RBIs en route to being named CUNYAC MVP following the contest. Isaac Salazar came through with an insurance RBI. Kappes III went seven innings in earning the win as he allowed three runs on six hits while walking four and striking out two batters. Mauro earned his first save of the save as he allowed just one run on three hits over two innings despite walking two and finishing with three strikeouts.

Erik Rank allowed four runs on six hits in 6.2 innings in taking the loss for CCNY. Austin Ortiz pitched 1.1 innings, giving up a run on two hits while striking out two. Tyler DiBlasi had three hits while Chasanov had three hits and three RBIs. Stephen Suprun had the other RBI for the Beavers.

In the top of the second Chasanov singled to right and moved to second on a wild pitch. Souther placed a well-timed sacrifice bunt that moved Chasanov over.
Suprun grounded out to Hayden Tackett at short as CCNY got on the board first when Chasanov scored.

The score stayed like that until the bottom of the seventh. Gangwish singled through the right side before stealing second base. Cherichella was hit by a pitch, as was Spallin, on identical 3-2 counts. With the count in his favor, Anzalone smashed a grand slam over the left center field wall, which sent the Bloodhounds' bench into a frenzy as John Jay led 4-1.

Kappes III allowed a single and walked the first two he saw before he was lifted for Mauro. Mauro hit Ciriglinao to load the bases
forChasanov ripped a two-run single to left as the Beavers inched closer down 4-3 and continued their rally. Suprun walked before Brenner struck out. Mike Savino hit a grounder to first that had backspin, as Anzalone couldn't field it cleanly but managed to record the out at first.

Bowman led off the eighth with a single and found himself at third following two successful steals. With one out, Salazar ripped an RBI single to center that scored Bowman, making it a 5-3 game. Mauro got the first out before walking DiBlasi. Kevin Budzinski flew out for the second out.

Cirigliano singled up the middle for Chasanov, who with the bases loaded, singled through the right side making it a 5-4 John Jay lead.

Mauro got Souther swinging over the top at strike three as the Bloodhounds began the celebration. Anzalone was named CUNYAC Most Valuable Player.
