Baseball Closes Out Regular Season In Walk-Off Fashion On Senior Day; Besting Lehman College, 4-3, And 9-8 In Extra Innings

Madison, NJ - The John Jay baseball team closed out the 2024 regular season in dramatic fashion, holding on to a 4-3 win in the opener over Lehman before getting a walk-off RBI single from Quentin Bowman in game two, as the Bloodhounds defeated the Lightning, 9-8, in eight innings.

John Jay finishes the year at 17-21 and 7-5 in CUNYAC play while Lehman concludes at 0-26 and 0-12 in league play.

Before the start of today's contest, the Bloodhounds recognized their seven seniors in a pregame ceremony.

Game 1 - John Jay 4, Lehman 3
The Bloodhounds held a 2-1 lead after one and both team teams added a score in the fourth. John Jay went ahead 4-2 and held off Lehman's comeback attempt, earning a 4-3 victory in game one.

The John Jay lineup featured six of the seven seniors who were honored before game time. David Michalski led the way with two hits. Quentin Bowman, Axel Kappes III, and Michael Mauro each had an RBI in the contest.

Mauro earned his fifth victory of the season, going four innings as he allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out three. Michael Luongo had three strikeouts in two innings while Julio Reyes earned the save.

Ryan Rosa, Frederick de la Rosa, and Kevin Arias had two hits. de la Rosa had the lone RBI for the guests while Randy Polanco took the loss.

Mauro retired Rosa on three pitches but fell behind de la Rosa, who clubbed a solo home run on the ninth pitch of the at-bat as Lehman struck first.

The Bloodhounds answered back in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Michalski led things off with a double and advanced to third on a throwing error. The next batter, Bowman, sent a deep drive to right as Michalski tagged up and tied the game at 1-1. John Spallin walked before Mauro brought him in on a single back up the middle that gave John Jay a 2-1 advantage.

The score remained that way until the top of the fourth when Chris Cruz scored on a throwing error by Mauro as Arias, who doubled to start the inning, came around to score.

In the bottom of the frame, Michalski reached on a fielding error by the right fielder, as Joseph Salerno came in to score the go-ahead run. The Bloodhounds stretched their lead to two, as Kappes III singled to right, scoring Jaxen Gangwish

Reyes came on for Luongo. Tran Hennessy lined out to center before Stefan Allen reached on a throwing error and Rosa reached on a fielding error by Gangwish as the Lightning got to within one, 4-3.

Reyes regrouped on the mound, striking out de la Rosa and Arias to end the game as the Bloodhounds held on for the one-run victory.

Game 2 - John Jay 9, Lehman | 8 innings)

John Jay trailed 8-3 after four innings, but the tenacious Bloodhounds scored two in the bottom of the fifth and tied the score in the seventh with a three-run frame before getting the winning run in dramatic fashion, as John Jay walked it off, 9-8.

Kappes III started the contest, allowing eight runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings while walking one and striking out three. Fernando Sladky came on in relief, working 4.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits, and fanning five batters in picking up the win, his first career relief win.

Ryan Cherichella, Santo Anzalone, and Bowman all had multi-hit games, with Cherichella going 3 for 5 with an RBI. Bowman finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, which included the game-winner in the eighth inning.

Chris Cruz paced the visitors with three hits while Rosa, Brandon Deynes, and Erik Then each recorded two hits. de la Rosa led the way with two RBIs. Justin Chamorro worked 1.1 innings, giving up a run in two hits, and didn't factor into the decision. Rich Acosta allowed four runs on five hits in 4.2 innings in relief. Rich Frommelt took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits in 1.1 frames.

Both teams went scoreless in the first before Lehman scored twice in their half of the second. Arias was plunked by a pitch before Cruz singled to right field. A sacrifice bunt moved Arias to third and Cruz to second.
Then reached on an infield single as the wind swirled the ball back into play just before the outstretched grasp of Mauro. A wild pitch allowed Arias to score before Hennessy flew out to right as Cruz tagged up on the play, making it 2-0.

Bowman ripped a 2-2 single to center that ended Chamorro's afternoon. Acosta came on and Bowman found his way to third after a wild pitch and a steal. Anthony Agosta lofted a deep fly to center that Bowman came in on, cutting the deficit in half.

The Lightning added a run in the top of the third, going up 3-1. de la Rosa doubled down the left field line, scoring Elias Fermin. Kappes III picked off de la Rosa at second before striking out Arias to end the threat.

John Jay knotted things up in the bottom of the third. With one out, Gangwish reached on a bunt single before scoring on the double to left center from Cherichella. Spallin was hit by a pitch before both he and Cherichella moved to third on a wild pitch. Anzalone worked a six-pitch walk to load the bases. Mauro got under the 1-0 pitch, sending one to center as Cherichella tagged up from third and scored, tying the game at 3-3.

Lehman staged a five-run top of the fourth in building an 8-3 lead. Four straight hits broke the 3-3 tie as Deynes singled home Cruz. Rosa sent a single to right centerfield for the fifth run of the contest.
Fermin worked a nine-pitch walk as Then crossed the plate as Lehman increased their lead to 6-3. Sladky hit de la Rosa that scored Hennessy before Arias lined out to short and Fermin got caught in a rundown but not before Rosa scored as the Lightning bolted up their lead to 8-3.

The Bloodhounds inched close in the bottom of the fifth. Cherichella doubled to right center before Spallin tripled to nearly the identical spot as Cherichella scored. Anzalone singled up the middle to bring in Spallin as John Jay trailed by three, 8-5.

In the top of the seventh, Sladky struck out Arias before ending the frame with a strikeout of Then on six pitches. Frommelt came on for Acosta to start the bottom of the seventh. He hit Spallin with a pitch before Anzalone singled to center field. Mauro sent a screaming liner that was snagged by the shortstop for the first out. Bowman reached on a fielder's choice as Spallin scored on the throwing error by the shortstop, making it 8-6.

Isaac Salazar came on for Agosta as a pinch-hitter. Salazar sent a hard-hit grounder that squeaked under the glove of the Lehman shortstop, scoring Anzalone as the Lightning lead dwindled to 8-7.
Vincent Gangone singled to centerfield scoring the tying-run in Bowman, which made it 8-8. Kappes III was intentionally walked as Frommelt struck out Gangwish and got Cherichella to ground out, sending the game to extra innings.

Sladky needed just seven pitches to get Hennessy, Allen, and Rosa in order.

Spallin led off the bottom of the eighth with a line out to third. Anzalone drew a walk before Mauro was hit by a pitch.

Bowman had the count even at 2-2 after fouling two straight balls. He connected on a single up the middle as Anzalone raced around third and slid home, sending the Bloodhounds' bench into a frenzy and capping off Senior Day with the walk-off victory.

John Jay will be the No. 3 seed in the CUNYAC Baseball Championships as they will head to New Rochelle, NY to tangle with the No. 2 seed Baruch College Bearcats.

First-pitch from Flowers Park is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7.
