Men's Soccer Drops Midweek Home Contest To University of Saint Joseph On Wednesday

New York, NY - The John Jay men's soccer team held the University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays off the board in the first half but the visitors managed to stage two goals five minutes apart before tallying a third nearly ten minutes later as the Bloodhounds fell 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

With the decision, John Jay falls to 1-4-0 on the season. The University of Saint Joseph improves their record to 2-3-1 on the year and picks up the first win in this head-to-head series.

Brayan Alvarez netted his first goal of the season and 11th of his career while Junior Guaman was credited with his first helper of the year and seventh in a Bloodhound kit.

Henry McGarrah V, Matt Clarke, and Jeferson Leon scored for the BlueJays with Jeremy Gibbs assisting on the Clarke goal in the 60'.

The BlueJays tested starting goalkeeper Davio Rossi-Levin early in the contest, as the first-year Bloodhound managed to make the stop to his right on a right-footed blast from McGarrah V. in the ninth minute.

Alvarez booted an attempt that was stopped by Will Slayton in the 15'. Saint Joseph nearly broke the stalemate in the 16' as McGarrah V tried to push one past Rossi-Levin in the box but he was up to the task for the save.

John Jay continued to apply pressure as Alvarez, and Kelvin De La Cruz each had their chances blocked. Maksym Ivanov had two tries, a header chance that was turned aside, but Ivanov settled the rebound with Slayton making the second stop.

With two minutes before the intermission, Rossi-Levin stopped Damir Cirikovic, keeping the match scoreless. John Jay held a 9-6 edge on shot attempts in the first half with five of those chances finding their way on target. The Bloodhounds had a 5-1 advantage on set pieces in the opening stanza.

Before the second half commenced, both teams elected to swap their goalkeepers. Within the first minute, it was John Jay who looked for the early test on Aidan Peterson as Damian Coronel sent a left-footed attempt from just outside the box.

In the 51', Leon tested Solis, finding space and putting in a shot that Solis denied. The visitors continued to apply pressure and capitalized in the 55' as Leo dribbled off the side of the field and beat Solis nearside to put USJ up 1-0.

John Jay had a pair of chances in the 57' and the 59' as Sebastian Leja blasted a chance that found Peterson's waiting arms before Alvarez also fired a chance two minutes later.

The BlueJays extended their lead in the 60' as Clarke scored off the feed from Gibbs in the box.

Alvarez continued to try and spark the Bloodhounds' offense as he fired from point-blank range off the pass from Alejandro De Jesus in the 65'. McGarrah V netted the third goal for the USJ in the 69' as the visitors were awarded a penalty shot.

In the 75', John Jay found the right combination as Guaman worked the give-and-go with Alvarez who fired a shot to the back right of the goal. Solis kept John Jay in the contest, preventing McGarrah from attempting his second goal of the match.

The veteran goalkeeper continued to turn away the offensive burst with two more stops late.

For the match, John Jay recorded 20 shots (12 on target) while USJ netted 23 shots (14 on goal).

John Jay will close
