Baseball Opens CUNYAC Play With Sweep Of Lehman On Friday

Trenton, NJ - The defending CUNYAC champions, the John Jay Bloodhounds, opened up conference play on Friday, hosting the Lehman College Lightning at Trenton Thunder Ballpark. The Bloodhounds swept both games of the doubleheader, earning a 5-2 victory in game one and a 20-1 triumph in game two.

Game 1 | John Jay 5, Lehman 2

John Jay junior right-hander Sean Jost produced a magnificent start, tossing his second straight complete game outing in helping the Bloodhounds pick up their first CUNYAC win of the season, 5-2, over the visiting Lightning. Jost moved to 2-0 on the season after tossing 109 pitches while allowing just two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out three.

Ryan Cherichella and Ethan Simaan had two hits each; Hayden Tackett, Anthony Agosta, and Simaan each drove in an RBI for the Bloodhounds.

Lehman's Leniel Rivera had two hits and two RBIs to pace the visitors. Justin Chamorro took the loss after going 4.2 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out two batters.

Quentin Bowman kicked off the second with a double to left and moved up to third on a passed ball. With the count full, Tackett flew out to center as Bowman tagged up on the play and scored the game's first run. In the bottom of the third, the Bloodhounds tacked on another run. Simaan started the inning with a single to right field. He moved into scoring position on a passed ball. With two outs, Cherichella roped a single that gave the Bloodhounds runners on the corners. Both moved up as Simaan scored on a passed ball.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, Lehman evened the contest with two runs in their half of the fifth inning. Chris Cruz doubled to right center before Kevin Arias reached on an infield single to short. With the count knotted at 2-2, Rivera doubled down the left field line, scoring both Cruz and Arias.

John Jay added to their lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jaxen Gangwish singled down the left field line and moved to third on a pair of passed balls. Cherichella reached on the fielder's choice as Gangwish was out at home. Santo Anzalone singled to right, which moved Cherichella to second.  A walk to Sebastian Sanchez loaded the bases briefly as Cherichella came in on the passed ball. Tackett singled and loaded the bases for Agosta, who was hit with a pitch.

The next batter, Simaan, dropped a single to center field that plated Sanchez and knocked Chamorro out of the contest.

Jost needed just six pitches to set down the Lightning in the top of the sixth before striking out Rinel Maldonado for the final out.

Game 2 | John Jay 20, Lehman 1

The Bloodhounds carried the momentum from game one. Cherichella and Sanchez each had three hits, with Sanchez driving in a career-high 7 RBIs. Anzalone and Hordodyski added three RBIs and two hits. Kappes III improved to 3-1 on the season after tossing a complete game, four-hitter, allowing one run, one walk and striking out seven batters.

Cruz, Juan Maldonado, Rinel Maldonado, and Yojancel Almonte all had a hit for the Lightning, while Juan Maldonado drove in the lone RBI. Cruz singled to start the contest for Lehman but was retired on the fielder's choice. A walk to Deynes didn't impact the inning, as Kappes III got Rosa to fly out to center.

John Jay scored seven in their half of the first. Cherichella reached on an infield single to short before moving to second on a wild pitch. Anzalone doubled and scored Cherichella. Bowman added a double down the left field line, giving the home team a 2-0 lead. Sanchez connected on his second triple of the day, going down the right field line, as Bowman scored the Bloodhounds' third run. Isaac Salazar reached on an error by the right fielder that scored Sanchez. With two outs, Alvy Grullon reached on a fielding error by the Lehman shortstop, as Salazar came into score.

Gangwish, hitting for the second time in the frame, reached on a fielding error by the center fielder that scored both Tackett and Grullon.

Kappes III needed just six pitches to retire Lehman in the second. The Bloodhounds added two more runs in the bottom of the second, extending the lead to 9-0. Salazar and Sanchez moved up on a wild pitch while Salazar came into score on a passed ball.  John Jay continued their success at the plate as Anzalone delivered a two-run double to right field, upping the lead to 11-0 in the bottom of the third. Sanchez sent a sailing liner to left-center field as Anzalone tagged up and plated the 12th run of the contest for the Bloodhounds.

In the bottom of the fifth, James Hordodyski, who came on as a defensive replacement, sent a double to right center field that scored Mark Piri, who ran for Gangwish. Sanchez continued his hot-hitting day, singling to center field that scored Anzalone and Hordodyski as John Jay increased their lead to 15-0.

Lehman got on the board in the top of the sixth as Juan Maldonado doubled in Almonte. Kappes III regained his composure and got Deynes to ground out to end the inning.

The Bloodhounds continued to add to their total. Piri led off with a single down the left field line. A single by Cherichella and a walk loaded the bases for James Hordodyski

Hordodyski took the first pitch from Cruz and laced a two-run single that pushed the lead to 17-1. The next batter, Sanchez, finished his day by clubbing a three-run home run.

Kappes put the finishing touches on the complete game, four hitter. After giving up a single to Maldonado, he struck out Allen and got Rivera and Pujols to fly out, ending the ball game.

The Bloodhounds travel to Wilkes-Barre, PA, on Wednesday, April 2, as they will square off against King's College.
