Union, NJ - The 2024 CUNYAC baseball champions and No. 2 seed John Jay Bloodhounds were edged out by the No. 3 seed Baruch College, 7-6, in 15 innings on Tuesday evening at the Jim Hynes Baseball Stadium on the campus of Kean University in the CUNYAC First Round.

The Bloodhounds finish the year with a 15-20 overall record and an 8-4 league mark. The Bearcats, who move to 12-18 overall, will square off against the No. 1 seed CCNY in the Best-of-Three Championship series, commencing on Thursday.

Ryan Cherichella, James Hordodyski, Quentin Bowman, and Sebastian Sanchez each had two hits for the Bloodhounds. Bowman and Anzalone were each credited with an RBI. Starter Sean Jost threw nine strong innings, giving up four runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out a career-high nine batters. Danny Opramolla threw three innings of relief, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out a pair of Bearcats. Alvy Grullon, Michael Luongo, and Julio Reyes pitched an inning in relief. Reyes suffered the loss.

Baruch's Kenneth Pastrana had three hits and two RBIs, while Roy Longarzo, Peter Marino, and Joseph Cocozza also had two hits, with Cocozza adding two RBIs. John Kim tossed seven innings, giving up four runs (one earned) while walking four and striking out six batters. Joseph Bello worked six innings in relief of Kim, giving up two unearned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three. Andrew LaPointe worked two innings and struck out three batters to pick up the win.

Baruch struck for the first run of the game. Longarzo started things off with a ground-rule double. A walk to Marino gave the visitors runners on first and second as Cocozza singled in Longarzo, but Marino was thrown out at third on the play. The Bloodhounds took their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the third. Grullon started the frame with a triple to right center field before a throwing error by the Baruch shortstop pulled the first baseman off the bag, allowing Cherichella to reach and score Grullon.

Hordodyski singled down the right field and moved to third on Baruch's second error of the frame, as Cherichella came around to score, giving John Jay a 2-1 advantage. Anzalone capped off the three-run inning with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hordodyski.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, the Bearcats cut the deficit to 3-2. Christopher Petrillo doubled to start the stanza and moved to third on the sacrifice fly to right. Pastrana sent a single through the right side, plating home Petrillo.
John Jay upped its lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning. Hordodyski continued his hot approach at the plate, sending a single to right field and moving to third on the Anzalone ground out.

Bowman took the 0-1 pitch from Kim to center as Hordodyski trotted in, giving John Jay a two-run lead.
The Bloodhounds threatened for more as Sanchez singled through the right side, giving them runners on first and second, but Ethan Simaan grounded to second as Sanchez was forced out to end the threat.

Jost and Kim traded zeroes over the next two innings, with Jost striking out three batters. The Bearcats evened the score in the top of the eighth. Pastrana led off with a single to right center. Jost regained his composure, striking out Longarzo on six pitches. The next batter, Marino, sent a hard-hit down the right field line and raced to third as Pastrana scored. Cocozza produced the game-tying run with a sacrifice fly to center.

In the bottom of the inning. Sanchez reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. A walk to Simaan started the potential rally for the defending champions. Jaxen Gangwish came on as a pinch-runner for Simaan as Baruch elected to go to the bullpen, bringing in Bello. Hayden Tackett reached on the fielder's choice bunt, as Matthew Rappa fired a strike to Petrillo at third to get the lead runner, Sanchez, for the first out of the inning. Anthony Agosta lofted a high pop-up that the umpires called for the infield fly rule for the second out. Grullon ended the inning with a foul out to right.

In the top of the ninth, Andrew Page started the frame with a single to left center. The next batter, Andrew DeRose, reached on a fielder's choice bunt. Petrillo put down Baruch's second straight bunt in the inning, moving the runners up with one out. Down in the count 1-2, Rappa connected on a liner that was destined to go into the outfield, but Agosta leaped high and snagged the ball for the second out. Jost got out of danger as he got Longarzo to ground out to third.
Bello retired the Bloodhounds in order on ten pitches, as for the second straight season, John Jay and Baruch headed for extra innings in the CUNYAC First Round.

Opramolla came on for Jost to start the tenth. He gave up a lead-off single to Marino but was quickly erased as Anzalone fired a strike to Agosta, who applied the tag for the first out. Cocozza resumed the at-bat, sending a single to center field. Bello followed with a first-pitch single to right. The next batter, Page, couldn't bring in Cocozza as he bunted foul with two strikes for the second out. The Bloodhounds got out of danger as Cocozza was picked off at third to end the inning.

Baruch had two outs in the top of the 11th before the Bearcats produced three straight doubles in taking a 6-4 lead. Rappa sent a double down the left field line. Pastrana replaced him at second with an RBI double to right. Cameron Soto came on for Pastrana as a pinch-runner and scored on the double from Longarzo. In the bottom of the 11th, Agosta sent a one-out single to center. Mark Piri came on for Agosta as a pinch-runner. Grullon, down in the count 0-2, was hit by an errant pitch. The next batter, Cherichella, flew out to center, which moved both runners up.

Down to their last out, Hordodyski worked the count full. On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, he sent a grounder to Cocozza at short, but his throw was off-line, allowing Piri and Grullon to score, tying the game at 6-6. Anzalone was intentionally walked as Hordodyski represented the winning run. Bowman stepped in and hit a hot shot to short, but the ball made contact with Hordodyski, ending the inning.

In the top of the 13th, Grullon came on to pitch. Following a walk to Nick Benedetto, Grullon fielded the grounder that took an unexpected spin towards first. Grullon fired a strike to Hordodyski for the first out and got Petrillo by a few steps at first to complete the double play. Rappa struck out on four pitches to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Cherichella sent a double down the right field line. Hordodyski walked on nine pitches. Anzalone popped up to first for the second out of the inning. Both runners advanced a base following a wild pitch, but John Jay couldn't get the walk-off run as Bowman flew out to center.

In the top of the 14th, Luongo replaced Grullon, setting the Bearcats in order with Marino sending a frozen rope to second as Gangwish recorded the out.

In what turned out to be the final inning of the contest, Luongo hit the first two batters in Cocozza and Bello. Reyes came on and struck out LaPointe before hitting Benedetto, which loaded the bases. Petrillo reached on a fielder's choice, sending a grounder to first, but Cocozza beat the throw, as Baruch took the lead. Reyes rebounded with a strikeout of Rappa and forced out Petrillo at second. LaPointe returned to the hill for the Bearcats. He struck out Jeremy Tejada and Reyes before Cherichella grounded out to end the 4:07 long contest.
