Women's Soccer Opens 2025 Season With 2–0 Victory over Old Westbury

New York, NY - The John Jay women's soccer team opened their title defense in their season opener on Saturday afternoon, posting a 2-0 home victory over SUNY Old Westbury at Field #74 on Randall's Island.

The Bloodhounds, from the opening whistle, controlled the tempo of the contest, outshooting the Panthers, 22-2, with ten shots coming on goal.

Eight minutes into the contest, newcomer Ava Lopez set the tone, as she broke free and received the feed from fellow newcomer Sofia Soler, giving John Jay a 1-0 lead.The Bloodhounds carried the momentum into the second half as they got a second tally from Lopez, as tri-captain Sofia Astarbi found the right combination, which set up Lopez for her second goal of the day and first career multi-goal performance.
 



Soler finished with ten shot attempts, five of which were on target. In total, nine newcomers for the Bloodhounds saw action in the contest.

2024 CUNYAC First-Teamer Gianna Duarte was credited with one save on the afternoon, stopping a shot attempt by the Panthers' Taryn Hilke. Old Westbury's Kristen Gallagher was credited with eight saves despite yielding the two goals.

Today's results extend John Jay's winning streak over Old Westbury to five consecutive games as the Bloodhounds now lead the head-to-head series, 5-4.
