Women's Soccer Powers Past Maritime On Tuesday, 4-1

Throggs Neck, NY - Behind a two-goal performance from Katy Shurson and three assists from Sofia Soler, the John Jay College women's soccer team earned a 4-1 road victory over Maritime College on Tuesday evening at Reinhart Field.

Shurson paced the John Jay offense with two goals, while Natalie Mack and Ava Lopez each added a goal. Soler continued her impressive playmaking form, assisting on three of the Bloodhounds' four tallies, while Priana Lazerson contributed an assist.

John Jay controlled the offensive tempo throughout the contest, outshooting the Privateers by a commanding 44-6 margin, including a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Bloodhounds also held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

Despite generating 24 first-half shots, John Jay had to wait until the closing minutes of the opening stanza to break through. In the 44th minute, Soler delivered a corner kick into the penalty area, where Shurson finished at the far post to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

The Bloodhounds wasted little time extending their lead following the intermission. In the 51st minute, Mack connected with Lazerson on a give-and-go before finishing to the goalkeeper's left for her sixth goal of the season, doubling John Jay's advantage to 2-0.

John Jay continued to apply pressure, with Mack, Genesis Quito-Rodas and Soler each striking the crossbar during a nine-minute stretch early in the second half.

The Bloodhounds pushed their lead to 3-0 in the 60th minute as Shurson connected on a header off another well-placed corner kick from Soler, completing her second multi-goal performance of the contest's scoring sequence.

Maritime got on the scoreboard in the 76th minute when Eva Garcia converted a loose ball following a saved free-kick opportunity, trimming the deficit to 3-1.

John Jay responded just over five minutes later. In the 81st minute, Soler delivered her third assist of the evening on another corner kick, setting up Lopez for her sixth goal of the season and sealing the 4-1 victory.

Mack led all players with 12 shots, including four on target, while Lopez finished with 10 attempts. Soler added seven shots and three assists, while Shurson recorded five shots, four on goal, and two goals.

Defensively, Anina Gut earned the victory in goal, playing the opening 66:55 and making one save without conceding. Gianna Duarte handled the final 23:05, recording one save.

Maritime goalkeeper Devon Etienne faced consistent pressure throughout the evening, while Garcia accounted for the Privateers' lone goal.

John Jay will continue their road stretch as they resume CUNYAC play on Saturday, October 17 as the Bloodhounds travel to Brooklyn College to tangle with the Bulldogs.

Kickoff is slated for noon.
