Women's Soccer Edged by CCNY, 1-0, in CUNYAC Showdown

New York, NY – Despite a strong second-half push and eight saves from goalkeeper Anina Gut, the John Jay women's soccer team suffered a narrow 1-0 setback to CCNY in a pivotal conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Randall's Island.

With the result, the Bloodhounds move to 5-6-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play, while the Beavers improve to 5-5-0 and remain unbeaten in league action at 3-0-0.

CCNY struck for the contest's lone goal in the 16th minute as Dianne Guncay netted her second tally of the season at the 15:20 mark, giving the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.

The Beavers controlled much of the opening half, outshooting John Jay 12-3 while placing seven attempts on target. Gut was instrumental in keeping the Bloodhounds within striking distance, recording six first-half saves, including three in the opening 11 minutes.

John Jay generated opportunities of its own as senior Natalie Mack registered an early attempt in the 13th minute before Yamile Bastidas tested CCNY goalkeeper Jade Salas with a shot on target at 18:48. Mack added another scoring opportunity in the 30th minute, but Salas was positioned to make the stop.

The Bloodhounds entered halftime trailing by just one goal despite the Beavers' offensive pressure.

John Jay emerged from the intermission with renewed intensity, controlling more of the attacking play and outshooting CCNY 6-4 over the final 45 minutes.

One of the Bloodhounds' best opportunities came in the 53rd minute when Genesis Quito directed an attempt on goal, only to have the Beavers' defense turn it away with a team save.
John Jay continued to apply pressure midway through the second stanza. Bastidas forced another save from Salas in the 67th minute before Sofia Soler followed with a shot on target just over two minutes later.

Mack nearly brought the Bloodhounds level in the 71st minute, but her attempt was denied by another CCNY team save, preserving the visitors' slim advantage.

The Bloodhounds continued searching for the equalizer in the closing stages, with Soler registering John Jay's final attempt in the 88th minute. However, the shot sailed high as CCNY held on for the one-goal victory.

For the contest, CCNY finished with a 16-9 advantage in total shots, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. John Jay's second-half surge helped narrow the statistical gap after the Beavers dominated the opening period.

Mack and Soler paced the Bloodhounds' offensive attack with three shots apiece. Mack placed two attempts on target, while Soler recorded one. Bastidas contributed two shots, both on goal, while Quito added one attempt on target.

Gut delivered another strong performance between the posts, finishing with eight saves across the full 90 minutes while allowing just one goal.

Defensively, the Bloodhounds limited CCNY to four second-half shots and two attempts on target after surrendering 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes.

The Bloodhounds conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon as they will host Bryant & Stratton (Syracuse) on Randall's Island - Field 85.

Kickoff is slated for 3:45 p.m.
