West Harrison, NY - The John Jay baseball team trailed twice on Tuesday night against the Yeshiva University Maccabees, before getting a timely sacrifice-RBI fly from
Hayden Tackett as the Bloodhounds edged out Yeshiva, 4-3.
John Jay (1-5) was paced by
James Horodyski,
Sebastian Sanchez, and
Jaxen Gangwish, who each had two hits. Gangwish, Tackett, and
Itaru Asai each added an RBI in the victory.
Craig Zuckerman took the mound in his first start of the year, throwing five innings while giving up three runs (two earned runs) on six hits, walking two, and striking out a career-high six.
Thiago Telles came on in relief, earning his first career win after tossing four scoreless innings, giving up a hit and striking out three batters.
Jacob Canner and Lior Bongart each had two hits for the Maccabees, while Bongart and RJ Hellman drove in an RBI. Jacob Shakin toed the hill to start, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits over 4.1 innings. He walked three and struck out seven without factoring into the decision. Josh Canner came on, allowing a hit, walking three, and striking out five in taking the loss. Jacob Canner came on in relief, giving up a run while walking two and adding a strikeout.Â
The Maccabees struck first in the bottom of the second as Jacob Canner doubled to left. Hellman ripped a single to left, bringing in Canner for the first run. Yeshiva continued the inning with a Bongart single to right, giving the home team runners on first and second, but both were stranded as Aharon Weiden struck out.
The visitors evened things up in the top of the first. With two outs,
Vincent Gangone singled to right field. The next batter,
Mark Piri, walked. Asai took an 0-1 pitch to right field, scoring Gangone and leveling things at 1-1.
Yeshiva broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth. Simmy Goldberger tripled to right before Hellman drew a free pass. Hellman stole second, but Goldberger was out at home trying to steal. The next batter, Bongart, singled to right field, bringing in Hellman as Yeshiva led 2-1.
John Jay scored twice in the top of the fifth. Horodyski sent a one-out single to right before moving up on a successful steal of second.
Sebastian Sanchez reached first on an error by the right fielder. Gangwish, facing a full count, ripped a double to center, scoring the tying run in Horodyski.
Tackett walked on seven pitches, which prompted a change by Yeshiva on the mound. Following a strikeout, Tackett moved to second on a wild pitch from Shakin, as Sanchez scored. John Jay continued to threaten with a walk to Piri, but the inning came to an end on an Asai flyout to right.
Yeshiva tied the score in their half of the fifth. Jake Arnow walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, Noah Steinmetz, sent a grounder to third as Arnow scored on the error. The score remained knotted at 3-3 until the top of the ninth. Jacob Canner came on for Josh Canner and immediately surrendered a triple to Sanchez. With one out, Hackett lofted a deep fly to centerfield as Sanchez tagged up and scored the go-ahead run.
Jose Suero entered as a pinch-hitter and walked. Piri also walked as the Bloodhounds had runners on first and second before Asai grounded out back to Canner for the third out.
Telles gave up a single to Canner before striking out Goldberger for the first out. John Jay clinched the win as Hellman grounded into the game-ending 1-4-3 double play.
The Bloodhounds are slated to travel to TCNJ on Wednesday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. start.Â
