Flemington, NJ - A day after securing their first win of the season, the John Jay baseball team was back on the field as they kept pace with The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) before the Lions tacked on four late runs as the Bloodhounds dropped a 12-6 decision on Wednesday afternoon.
John Jay (1-6) notched six hits, with
Jayden Dixon,
Sebastian Sanchez,
Hayden Tackett,
Alex Morrissey,
Mark Piri, and
Itaru Asai all collecting a hit on the day. Tackett and Asai tallied two RBIs while Dixon and
James Horodyski collected an RBI for the visitors.
Sanchez took the loss (0-1) after throwing three innings, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and walking four batters. Morrissey came on in relief of Sanchez, tossing three innings, giving up one run on four hits.
Thiago Telles allowed three runs on one hit before
Danny Opramolla came on to finish, firing two scoreless innings with a walk and a strikeout.Â
The Lions got two hits apiece from Joe Tammaro, Andrew Pearson, and Nate McLaughlin. Tyler Provost drove in a team-high four RBIs while Jake Carter, Braden Dromboski, and Pearson each drove in two RBIs.
Jack Reardon started on the hill for TCNJ, giving up four runs on four hits in two innings of work. LC Smith came on in relief, throwing two innings, giving up a run on a hit. Brady Reardon worked an inning before Tyler Perry pitched four scoreless frames, striking out four in recording the win for TCNJ.
Sanchez got things going for the Bloodhounds, sending a two-out single to right. Tackett, facing a 0-1 count, connected on his first home run of the season as John Jay took a 2-0 lead.
TCNJ erupted for five runs in their half of the first, with Pearson delivering one of the biggest hits, a two-run single to right field to up the Lions' lead to 5-2.
The Bloodhounds narrowed the gap to 5-4. Piri commenced the inning with a walk and promptly stole second. Asai singled down the right field line, bringing in Piri. Asai moved into scoring position with a successful steal of second. Horodyski sent a sacrifice fly to left as Asai tagged up and scored.
TCNJ added a run in the bottom of the inning as Carter lined out to right with Michael Contilliano tagging up and scoring on the play.
Following a scoreless third inning, the Bloodhounds once again rallied to get to within one run, 6-5. Piri again was the catalyst, sending a base hit through the right side. Asai walked to give the visitors runners on first and second.
Alex Daly reached first on a fielding error to load the bases.
With one out, Dixon reached on a fielder's choice, as Piri scored on the play.
Jaxen Gangwish was hit by a pitch to reload the bases for Sanchez, who grounded to third to end the frame.
In the bottom half of the inning, Braden Dromboski singled up the middle to score Provost and Joe Tammaro as the TCNJ lead increased to 8-5.
In the top of the fifth, John Jay continued to climb back in the contest. Tackett worked a walk before Morrissey reached on an infield single. Asai continued to produce, as he sent a deep fly to left, plating home Tackett as John Jay trailed TCNJ, 8-6.
TCNJ added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a McLaughlin RBI single up the middle, as the Lions led 9-6. The home team added three more runs on a three-run home run from Provost in the bottom of the seventh.
John Jay will close out the midweek road trips on Friday, March 13, as they travel to Neumann for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
