Throggs Neck, NY — John Jay's
Sebastian Sanchez belted a pair of home runs while teammate
Jayden Dixon added a game-tying three-run shot in the fifth inning, but the Bloodhounds fell to Maritime, 14-6, on Thursday evening at Reinhart Field.
The Bloodhounds dropped to 1-11 on the season, while the Privateers improved to 3-8.
John Jay wasted little time jumping in front.
Jaxen Gangwish opened the game with a single to center, and after two outs, Sanchez drove a first-pitch over the wall in right field for a two-run homer to give the Bloodhounds an early 2-0 advantage.
Maritime answered immediately in the bottom half. Dylan Payano singled with one out before Alex Bardi launched a two-run homer to center to even the score at 2-2.
The Privateers moved in front in the second inning and did most of their early damage with two outs. Blake Gnepper delivered an RBI double to right center, and Bardi followed with a two-run single to left to cap a three-run frame and put Maritime ahead, 5-2.
John Jay threatened in the fourth after Sanchez and
Hayden Tackett were both hit by pitches to begin the inning, and
Alex Daly moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt. But Maritime starter Andrew Heiderstadt worked out of trouble with back-to-back strikeouts to keep the Bloodhounds off the board.
The Bloodhounds broke through in the fifth.
Mark Piri worked a leadoff walk, and Gangwish followed with a single through the right side. Dixon then delivered the biggest swing of the night for John Jay, hammering a three-run homer to right field to tie the game at 5-5.
The deadlock lasted briefly, as Maritime answered with an eight-run bottom of the fifth, sending 13 batters to the plate and turning the game for good. Goodman started the scoring with an RBI single, Bardi ripped a three-run double down the left-field line, Owen Weber added an RBI double to right center, Harry Leipold tripled home a run, and Dominick Viggiano contributed an RBI single. A throwing error later in the inning allowed an unearned run to score as the Privateers surged in front, 13-5.
Maritime added one more run in the sixth on Weber's RBI double after Bardi reached on an error, extending the lead to 14-5.
Sanchez provided one final highlight for John Jay in the eighth, crushing his second homer of the game — a solo shot to left-center — to account for the final 14-6 margin. The first baseman finished 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBI, and two runs scored. Dixon also went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI, while Gangwish scored twice and collected two hits.
Ichiro Washington added a hit for the Bloodhounds.
Maritime piled up 20 hits in the win, led by Bardi's monster night. He went 3-for-5 with a home run, double, three runs scored, and seven RBI. Payano, Weber, Viggiano, and Leipold each had three-hit or two-hit efforts as the Privateers consistently applied pressure throughout the game.
On the mound,
Alex Morrissey was charged with the loss for John Jay after working 2.2 innings in relief.
Danny Opramolla started and allowed five runs over 1.2 innings.
Sean Jost and
Saujan Christie followed out of the bullpen before
Julio Reyes turned in an encouraging final two innings, striking out seven and not allowing a hit.
Francis Montalvo earned the win for Maritime after tossing three innings in relief. He allowed three runs on two hits while striking out six.
As a staff, Maritime pitchers struck out 15 John Jay hitters, while the Bloodhounds committed four errors in the field. Despite the loss, John Jay showed power at the plate with three home runs, accounting for all six of its runs.
The Bloodhounds return to the field on Saturday afternoon as the host team, taking on Manhattanville in a twinbill in Purchase, NY. First pitch from Manhattanville Baseball Field is set for noon.
