BRONX, N.Y. — John Jay dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Albertus Magnus on Friday afternoon at Bahoshy Field on the campus of Fordham University, falling 7-3 in Game 1 before a 14-4 (six innings) defeat in Game 2.
Game 1: Albertus Magnus 7, John Jay 3
A three-run first inning set the tone early as Albertus Magnus (4-7) capitalized on immediate opportunities. Reilly Austin delivered an RBI single before Karla Carangelo launched a two-run homer to give the Falcons a quick 3-0 advantage. Albertus Magnus added another run in the second to extend the lead to 4-0.
John Jay (4-9) began to chip away in the third inning.
Natalie Graham reached and moved into scoring position before
Kendal Bryant brought her home with an RBI groundout to make it 4-1.
The Falcons responded in the fifth with another momentum-shifting swing, as Carangelo connected on her second two-run home run of the game, pushing the lead to 6-1.
The Bloodhounds answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Adrianna Barragan ignited the rally with a bunt single, followed by a hit from
Kelly Fajardo. With two outs,
Kayla Sauers delivered a clutch two-RBI single to right field, cutting the deficit to 6-3.
Albertus Magnus added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single from Gina Solow, restoring a four-run cushion at 7-3. John Jay threatened in the seventh with multiple base runners, but reliever Madison Wilson shut the door to secure the victory.
Fajardo paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while
Alyssa Cadolino added two hits, including a double. Sauers drove in two runs, and Bryant accounted for the other RBI.
Lindsay Ogden (2-5) went the distance in the circle, striking out six, while Annabelle Jabs (2-4) earned the win for the Falcons.
Game 2: Albertus Magnus 14, John Jay 4
Albertus Magnus (5-7) erupted for six runs in the first inning of the nightcap and never looked back, completing the sweep with a 14-4 victory.
The Falcons strung together seven hits in the opening frame, highlighted by RBI singles from Mikaela Schwippert, Reilly Austin, and Karla Carangelo, before Amelia Boulli delivered a three-run double to cap the inning and give Albertus Magnus a commanding 6-0 lead.
John Jay (4-10) answered in the bottom of the first when
Alyssa Cadolino drove in
Kelly Fajardo with an RBI single to get the Bloodhounds on the board.
After a quiet stretch, Albertus Magnus added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Amelia Ovalles to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Bloodhounds mounted their best rally in the fourth inning.
Natalie Graham delivered an RBI single,
Samantha Santana scored on a passed ball, and
Kendal Bryant added an RBI single to cap a three-run frame, trimming the deficit to 7-4.
Albertus Magnus quickly regained control in the fifth, scoring four runs on five hits, including RBI contributions from Gianna Carrano, Schwippert, Carangelo, and Ovalles. The Falcons added three more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Megan Cross, to seal the 14-4 decision.
Graham led John Jay offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Fajardo reached base three times and scored once. Cadolino and Bryant each drove in a run, and Santana added a hit and a run scored.
Karla Carangelo (2-3) earned the win in the circle, allowing four runs (none earned) over four innings with eight strikeouts.
Natalie Graham (1-4) was charged with the loss after the opening-inning surge, while
Adrianna Barragan provided six innings of relief.
John Jay returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 24, as the Bloodhounds travel to Wayne, NJ to take on William Paterson.
