Bloodhounds Show Late Fight Across Twinbill But Drop Both Games To Manhattanville On Saturday

Purchase, NY — The John Jay baseball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to Manhattanville on Saturday afternoon, falling 11-6 in the opener and 12-4 in game two.

With today's outcome, the Bloodhounds fall to 1-13 overall while the Valiants move to 10-2 on the season.

Game 1: Manhattanville 11, John Jay 6
A three-run first inning and a decisive five-run third proved to be the difference on Saturday afternoon, as the John Jay baseball team fell to Manhattanville, 11-6, in non-conference action.

Manhattanville wasted no time setting the tone in the opening frame. Taking advantage of a throwing error and a pair of sacrifice flies, the Valiants manufactured three runs despite recording just one hit in the inning to grab an early 3-0 lead.

After a quiet second inning, Manhattanville broke the game open in the third. A string of base runners, including four hits, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch, fueled a five-run outburst that extended the lead to 8-0.

John Jay responded in the bottom half of the inning, showing signs of life offensively. Junior Jayden Dixon delivered a two-RBI single, scoring Jaxen Gangwish and Mark Piri to cut into the deficit at 8-2.

The Valiants answered again in the fifth, plating three more runs behind RBI efforts from Anthony Peterson, Griffin White, and Gregory Tashik to push the advantage to 11-2.

The Bloodhounds refused to go away. In the bottom of the fifth, Sebastian Sanchez and Hayden Tackett delivered back-to-back RBI doubles to trim the margin to 11-4. John Jay continued to apply pressure in the seventh, as Isaac Salazar drove in a run on a groundout before Itaru Asai followed with an RBI single to make it 11-6.

Offensively, Gangwish paced the Bloodhounds with a 3-for-4 performance, while Sanchez added two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Julian Diaz also contributed a pair of hits and a run scored, and Tackett chipped in an RBI double as part of John Jay's 12-hit effort.

On the mound, Saujan Christie took the loss after allowing three runs in the first inning. The bullpen saw contributions from Michael Luongo, Craig Zuckerman, Julio Reyes, and Mark Bowlin, with Bowlin tossing two scoreless innings in relief to close out the game.

Game 2: Manhattanville 12, John Jay 4
A game that remained tightly contested through four innings turned decisively in the fifth, as the John Jay baseball team fell to Manhattanville, 12-4.

John Jay (1-13) held an early lead and kept pace through the first half of the contest, but Manhattanville (10-2) used an explosive eight-run fifth inning to seize control and pull away late.

The Bloodhounds struck first in the bottom of the third. After Jayden Dixon worked a walk and Sebastian Sanchez followed with a single, Hayden Tackett delivered an RBI base hit to left field, giving John Jay a 1-0 advantage.

That lead held until the fifth, when the Valiants broke through in a major way. Manhattanville sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning, tallying seven hits and capitalizing on two John Jay errors. The rally featured a series of run-scoring doubles from Jacob Oakley, Aidan Rosario, Logan Alberto, and Dylan Roberts, along with additional RBI production from Oakley and a defensive miscue that allowed another run to score, as the Valiants surged ahead, 8-1.

John Jay responded in the bottom half of the inning, as Sanchez drove in Jaxen Gangwish with an RBI single to trim the deficit to 8-2. The Bloodhounds continued to chip away in the sixth, with Gangwish delivering an RBI single to score Mark Piri, making it 8-3.

However, Manhattanville answered once again in the seventh. A two-RBI single from Anthony Iazzetti, followed by RBI hits from Evan Kaloski and Logan Alberto, extended the lead to 12-3 and effectively put the game out of reach.

The Bloodhounds added one final run in the bottom of the seventh, as Isaac Salazar laced an RBI double to left center, scoring Julian Diaz to close the scoring at 12-4.

Offensively, John Jay was led by multi-hit performances from Sanchez, Tackett, and Salazar, while Gangwish reached base twice and drove in a run. The Bloodhounds finished with nine hits but left 10 runners on base.

On the mound, Sanchez was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs (three earned) over 4.2 innings. Alex Morrissey and Thiago Telles combined to handle the final 2.1 innings in relief.

The Bloodhounds return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 24 as they travel to Rutgers Newark for a 3:30 p.m. first-pitch.
