Softball Earns Sweep Of Sarah Lawrence In Home Opener On Wednesday

Union, NJ – The defending three-time CUNYAC softball champions, the John Jay Bloodhounds, commenced their home slate on Wednesday evening, as they swept the visiting Sarah Lawrence Gryphons, 18-4 in game one and 14-2 in game two.

John Jay moves to 4-4 overall on the season while Sarah Lawrence, who commenced their season this afternoon, drops to 0-2.

The Bloodhound bats didn't get fazed by the cold, Northeast temperature, as John Jay opened the contest pouring in ten runs and didn't look back en route to a 18-4 win in five innings.

12 of the 13 Bloodhounds that appeared at the plate got a hit in the opener as Natalie Graham, Kendal Bryant, and Alyssa Cadolino tallied three hits apiece with Graham driving in three RBIs. Elika Rodrigues added two RBIs while Bryant, Cadolino, Kelly Fajardo, Cleriys Fornerin, and Zoe Lowe all added an RBI in the victory.

The top four batters of Rodrigues-Graham-Bryant-Cadolino scored three runs apiece. Kiki Iglesias earned her first win of the season, tossing four innings of two-hit ball, while allowing a run, four walks and striking out a season-high seven batters. Bryant came on in relief.

Nicaia Sharp and Caileigh Koenig had a hit in the contest with Koenig, Isabella Boissonnault, and Ariana Spanopoulos were credited with an RBI. Koenig took the loss inside-the-circle, tossing all four innings while recording five strikeouts and walking two batters.

Sarah Lawrence opened the game two with a pair of runs in the top of the first before the Bloodhounds chipped away and opened the contest in the bottom of the third and fourth to post a 14-2 five inning triumph.

Natalie Polanco led the way for the home team with a 3 for 3 night while scoring two runs and adding an RBI. Bryant, Cadolino, and Fajardo each had two hits while Graham drove in three more RBIs. Cadolino and Sidney Bankston each drove in two RBIs in the victory.

Adrianna Barragan went three innings, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out four before Lindsay Ogden came on and worked two scoreless frames with four strikeouts to earn the victory.

The Gryphons were paced by Koenig at the plate, who went 2 for 3 with the lone RBI. Sharp and Kyra Johnsen each tallied a hit. Koenig took the ball for game two, tossing 92 pitches while striking out two and walking two while yielding four wild pitches and surrendering 13 hits. 

The Bloodhounds will be back at Cougar Softball Field at Kean University on Saturday March 7 as they host Ramapo with first-pitch set for noon.
