John Jay Rallies Late To Defeat Manhattanville, 7-5, In Eight Innings

Purchase, NY - The John Jay softball team erased an early deficit and used a two-run eighth inning to defeat Manhattanville, 7-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Valiants Softball Field. The Bloodhounds improved to 9-16 overall, while Manhattanville fell to 11-7.

John Jay trailed 5-3 entering the fifth inning before rallying to tie the game and eventually pulling away in extra frames. The Bloodhounds capitalized on timely hitting and defensive miscues, while Lindsay Ogden delivered a complete-game effort in the circle.

Manhattanville struck first in the opening inning, using back-to-back RBI doubles from Isabella Tansey and Lianna Lara to take a 2-0 lead. John Jay responded immediately in the second.

Alyssa Cadolino opened the frame with a single, that marked the 100th career hit for the Bloodhound first baseman.

Sidney Bankston followed with a hit. Adrianna Barragan drove in the first run with an RBI single, and the Bloodhounds took the lead moments later on a wild pitch and Natalie Polanco's RBI groundout, making it 3-2.

The Valiants answered in the bottom half, capitalizing on a throwing error and an RBI fielder's choice from Emma Foster to regain a 4-3 advantage. Manhattanville added another run in the fourth inning when Emma Foster scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5-3.

John Jay clawed back in the fifth inning. Kelly Fajardo reached base and moved into scoring position before Kendal Bryant lifted a sacrifice fly. A throwing error in the outfield allowed two unearned runs to score, tying the contest at 5-5.

After scoreless sixth and seventh innings, the Bloodhounds broke through in the eighth. With the international tiebreaker runner on second, Bryant delivered the go-ahead RBI single up the middle to score Fajardo. Later in the inning, Kayla Sauers added an insurance run with an RBI single to give John Jay a 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Samantha Reyer Sydni Brooks started the inning at second as the phantom runner. With two outs, Cady Sickler walked. With runners on first and second, Brooks was caught in a run down, as she over slide third base with Bryant applying the tag to seal the win for the Bloodhounds.

Ogden shut the door in the bottom half, stranding two runners to secure the victory. The right-hander tossed all eight innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out eight.

Bryant led John Jay offensively, finishing 1-for-3 with two RBIs including the go-ahead hit. Sauers went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Barragan added an RBI single. Cadolino, Bankston, and Polanco each recorded hits for the Bloodhounds, and Fajardo scored twice.

Manhattanville was paced by Josie O'Leary, who recorded two hits and scored a run. Tansey and Lara each doubled and drove in a run, while Foster finished with an RBI and run scored. Breanna Ochoa added a triple and scored for the Valiants.

The Bloodhounds resumes CUNYAC play this Saturday, April 11 as they will travel to New Rochelle, NY to take on Baruch at Flowers Park. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
