Langhorne, PA - The John Jay women's soccer team grabbed an early advantage behind
Bella Steele's first goal of the season, but Cairn University rallied for five unanswered goals as the Bloodhounds fell, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at Stillman Athletic Complex.
John Jay (0-3-0) came out on the attack and needed just 4:30 to open the scoring. After
Ava Lopez registered the first shot of the match and the Bloodhounds earned an early corner, Steele found the back of the net to give John Jay a 1-0 advantage.
The Bloodhounds continued to generate opportunities throughout the opening half. Lopez put a shot on target in the 17th minute before
Sofia Soler forced another save from Cairn goalkeeper Rhian Erspamer in the 23rd minute.
Genesis Quito-Rodas followed with a pair of attempts, while
Yamile Bastidas registered consecutive shots on goal as John Jay continued to pressure the Highlanders.
Cairn (3-1-0) eventually broke through in the 36th minute when Ella Quince scored off an assist from Paige Noble to level the match at 1-1. Just 2:10 later, Quince struck again, this time off a feed from Paityn Smith, giving the Highlanders a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.
Despite trailing at the break, John Jay held a 9-6 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes and generated four corner kicks while Cairn did not record one. The Highlanders seized control early in the second half. Juliana Condurso extended the lead to 3-1 in the 51st minute, finishing a pass from Quince.

Anina Gut kept the deficit at two moments later with a save on Smith before
Nyxx Butler entered in goal in the 57th minute. Quince completed her hat trick in the 67th minute, scoring off an assist from Gianna Manning to make it 4-1. Smith capped the scoring just over three minutes later, converting a Condurso assist for Cairn's fifth goal.
John Jay finished with 11 shots, including five on goal, while Cairn recorded 20 attempts with eight on target. The Bloodhounds also held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Lopez led John Jay with three shots, while Quito-Rodas, Soler and Bastidas recorded two apiece. Bastidas placed both of her attempts on goal, while Steele scored on her lone shot of the afternoon. Gut played the opening 56:14 in net and made two saves before Butler finished the final 33:46 and recorded one save.
Quince paced Cairn with three goals and an assist, factoring into four of the Highlanders' five goals.
The Bloodhounds travel to Mount Saint Vincent on Monday, September 14 for a 6:00 p.m. in Riverdale, NY
