Newark, NJ - The John Jay men's soccer team struck just 25 seconds into Sunday night's contest, but NYU responded with six unanswered goals as the Bloodhounds fell to the Violets, 6-1, at Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium on the campus of NJIT.
John Jay moves to 3-3 on the season, while NYU remains unbeaten at 5-0-1.
The Bloodhounds wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Just 25 seconds after the opening whistle,
Josh Clemas found the back of the net off an assist from
Sekou Sheriff, giving John Jay an immediate 1-0 advantage. It marked Clemas' team-leading fifth goal of the season.
NYU began to generate sustained pressure following the early goal and eventually found the equalizer in the 29th minute when Demir Calkap scored off a feed from Kyle Sakalosky.
The Violets took control late in the opening half. Fabio Orozco gave NYU a 2-1 advantage at the 37:53 mark before Tim Brdaric scored just 71 seconds later, sending the Violets into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
NYU carried its momentum into the second half. Ben Geist extended the advantage to 4-1 in the 50th minute before Giulio Potenti converted a penalty kick at 54:17. Brdaric added his second goal of the night in the 65th minute to close the scoring at 6-1.
The Violets finished with a 40-3 advantage in shots, placing 15 attempts on target, while also holding a 12-0 edge in corner kicks.
Davio Rossi-Levin made eight saves over 73:08 in goal for the Bloodhounds, while
Vlad Kuryliv came on for the final 16:52 and recorded one save without allowing a goal.
Clemas accounted for John Jay's lone shot on goal, while
Adrian Sudol registered the Bloodhounds' other two attempts. Clemas finished with a goal on his only shot, while Sheriff recorded his first assist of the contest.
The Bloodhounds will gear up for their home opener on Wednesday, September 16 as they welcome Old Westbury to Randall's Island – Field 74.
