New York, NY - The John Jay men's soccer team broke through twice in the second half while goalkeeper Davio Rossi-Levin turned in another clean sheet as the Bloodhounds defeated Old Westbury, 2-0, on Wednesday evening at Randall's Island.
With the victory, John Jay improved to 4-3-0 on the season, while Old Westbury fell to 1-3-1.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Bloodhounds took control of the match offensively in the second half. John Jay applied pressure immediately following the restart.
Aaron Cedillo put two shots on goal in the opening three minutes of the period before
Sekou Sheriff and
Daniel Mansur each forced saves from Old Westbury goalkeeper Paul DeGennaro.
The breakthrough finally came in the 71st minute.
Miguel Espinal helped create the opportunity for
Ian Hartigan, who found the back of the net at 70:13 for his first goal of the season, putting the Bloodhounds ahead, 1-0.
John Jay added an insurance goal less than 10 minutes later. After re-entering the match,
Josh Clemas struck at 80:06 off an assist from
Greg Semsarian, doubling the Bloodhounds' advantage to 2-0. It marked Clemas' sixth goal of the season.
The Bloodhounds continued to generate chances down the stretch, with Clemas,
Adrian Sudol and Antonio De Luca all testing DeGennaro during the final minutes. While the offense came alive after halftime, Rossi-Levin and the John Jay defense kept the Panthers off the scoreboard throughout the night. Rossi-Levin played all 90 minutes and finished with six saves to record the shutout.
John Jay finished with a 19-16 advantage in shots, including a decisive 13-6 edge in shots on goal. The Bloodhounds produced 15 of their 19 attempts in the second half after recording just four during the opening period.
Clemas led the attack with a match-high six shots, placing four on target, while Sudol finished with four attempts. Sheriff recorded three shots, including two on goal. Hartigan scored on his lone attempt of the match.
The Bloodhounds will open up conference play on Wednesday, September 23, as they will take on Hunter College on Randall's Island - Field 83 with a 3:00 p.m. kickoff.
