JOHN JAY ESPORTS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. What is Esports?

Esports is the fast-growing industry of competitive video gaming.

  1. Who can participate in the Esports program at John Jay?

All members of the John Jay community can participate in our Esports program and ECAC schedule, including full-time, part-time and graduate students, as well as staff and faculty. You must register with a valid John Jay email (@jjay.cuny.edu)

  1. What is the ECAC? What type of Esports activities does the ECAC sponsor?

The ECAC is the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, which provides post-season varsity sport opportunities for east coast schools Division I, II, and III.

The ECAC now sponsors Esports activities ranging from intramural/club/recreation play to varsity level competition. John Jay’s membership with ECAC Esports will be purely recreational for the Spring 2021 semester, meaning John Jay community members can play without practice, tryout, or other requirements typical of a varsity sport. Even on a recreational level, students will have access to post-season and special event opportunities.

  1. Are there academic qualifications to compete in Esports?

Students must be in good academic standing to compete in Esports. As with all extracurricular activities, we encourage students to find a healthy balance between their academic load and other activities. Academic advisement is available at http://www.jjay.cuny.edu/academic-advisement-center

  1. Once I register, do I have to commit to the full schedule?

Yes. If, after forfeiting two (2) games in one season, players will be disqualified and removed from the bracket and possibly any remaining matches. This will disqualify them from any postseason or finals brackets. Players who have been disqualified in this manner will still be allowed to compete in future seasons.

  1. Can I use John Jay facilities to compete in Esports?

There is currently no Esports facility to use to compete in Esports. Opportunities to compete are exclusively virtual in Spring 2021.

Players are responsible for the integrity of their own video game consoles, PCs, and internet connections.
