Stavros Zomopoulos

Stavros Zomopoulos is in his third season at the helm for the John Jay College of Criminal Justice men's soccer program.

A native of Athens, Greece, Zomopoulos is a 1987 graduate of Columbia University where he lettered for the Lions four seasons as a midfielder and helped the team capture three Ivy League championships and make three appearances into the NCAA Division I tournament.

In 2006, Zomopoulos led John Jay soccer to the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) championship game. Coming from the No. 8 seed, John Jay defeated the top seeded team in the quarterfinals before downing its semifinals opponent to advance to the championship round for the fourth time in program history.

In 2007, Zomopoulos rapidly improved the program taking the team from an eighth place in conference regular season play to a third place finish, allowing the Bloodhounds to host its quarterfinal round game. And in the meanwhile the Bloodhounds tripled their regular season win total and processed two first team conference All-Stars and a second team conference All-Star.

Zomopoulos has played semiprofessional soccer in Australia and Belgium. He is a 1983 graduate of Mamaroneck High School in Westchester County where he letter for two seasons on the boys soccer team after coming to the United States at the age of 16. He led the team to the sectional championship in 1981, played in the Empire State Games, and was named a Westchester County All-Star in 1982.

Prior to John Jay, Zomopoulos served as assistant women’s soccer coach for the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), and has also served as head coach of the Barnstonworth Rovers F.C. of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League.
