Bloodhounds Roar Past CSI, 3-1

New York, N.Y. — The John Jay women’s volleyball team got back on the winning track as they defeated the College of Staten Island (CSI) in four (28-30, 30-18, 30-24, 30-20) at the Doghouse on Tuesday evening.
 
The win brings John Jay’s record to 6-16 (4-4 CUNYAC), while CSI is now 7-13 (3-5 CUNYAC), as John Jay currently holds sole possession of fifth place in the conference.
 
The visiting Dolphins took control of the opening match early on by scoring the first five points of the game. CSI then built their lead to as much as eight (10-2 and 11-3) before John Jay got back into the contest.
 
Down 14-6, John Jay rallied off seven straight points to get to within one (14-13). But the Dolphins would pull away again, rallying off six straight points to take a tight 15-14 lead and break open a seven point cushion (21-14).
 
However the Bloodhounds were not done. Though trailing much of the opening match, John Jay managed a late lead (28-27) in the contest. But CSI would score the final three points of the game to take the first match.
 
In the second game after a see saw battle that saw the two knotted up at 12-12, John Jay rallied off five straight points to take the lead for good, holding the Dolphins to one offensive point the rest of the way.
 
The Dolphins would grab an early lead in the third game, leading by as much as six (8-2) before the Bloodhounds took control. With the score tied at 16-16, John Jay outscored the visitors 8-2 to take a 24-18 lead en route to win.
 
In the final game John Jay jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back as they have now won their last two conference matches.
 
John Jay recorded a season high 32 service aces, including nine by Maria Pacino (Bronx, NY/ Maria Regina) and seven each by Jennifer Gonzalez (Bronx, NY/ Jane Addams Vocational) and Sara Altimirano (Bronx, NY/ John F Kennedy).
 
Altimirano led the Bloodhounds with a game-high nine kills, while Jennifer Tiburcio (New York, NY/ Louis D Brandeis) had eight. Pacino also contributed with a game-high 30 assists, while Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY/ Brentwood) dug up 12 digs.
 
For CSI Vanessa Perez (Brooklyn, NY/ Fort Hamilton) had a team-high four kills, while Alba Basha (Staten Island, NY/ Curtis) had 23 digs.
 
John Jay will return to action on Thu. Oct. 19 to face SUNY Maritime for their home finale at 6 p.m.
