New York, N.Y.- The John Jay women's volleyball team fell in three straight losing to New Jersey City University (NJCU) (30-16, 30-13, 30-14) at the Doghouse on Tuesday evening.
The loss now drops the Bloodhounds to 4-14 on the season, while NJCU is now 17-5.
The match was nip and tuck through the early portion of the first game. But with the score 15-14 NJCU, the visiting Gothic Knights rallied off eight straight points to take a 23-14 lead behind the service of Sofia Gutierrez (Piscataway, NJ/ Piscataway) who recorded two service aces, six digs, and a game-high 32 assists.
In the second game NJCU got off to a 3-0 lead and never trailed as John Jay could not find a rally. The Bloodhounds recorded four points while servicing before suffering the biggest defeat of the night.
In the finale once again the Gothic Knights never traied. They jumped out to a 9-3 lead en route to victory.
For John Jay, Sara Altimirano (Bronx, NY/ John F Kennedy) paced John Jay with eight kills, while Jennifer Gonzalez (Bronx, NY/ Jane Addams Vocational) had six kills, two service aces, and five digs.
Lizzelle Cintron (Newark, NJ/ Elizabeth) led the charge for NJCU with a game-high 16 kills (one error) and 22 total attacks for a .680 attack percentage as the Gothic Knights recorded a .526 attack percentage.
Sara Torres (Elizabeth, NJ/ Science) also notched double-figures in kills with 10 (.690 percentage) as NJCU recorded 45 total kills in the match.
John Jay will return to action on Mon. Oct. 9 for the CUNYAC multi-match at Hunter College. The Bloodhounds will square off with Baruch College at 9 a.m. before meeting York College at 1 p.m.
