Bloodhounds Can’t Keep up with Pioneers

New York, N.Y. — The John Jay women’s basketball team was out rebounded 61-42, including 30-16 on the offensive end as the Bloodhounds suffer their first home loss of the season, losing to William Paterson University 62-49 on Wednesday.
 
The visiting Pioneers opened the game on a 7-0 run and led gate to wire.
 
William Paterson took their biggest lead of the half right before halftime on a free throw by Julie Haledjian (Montvale, NJ/ Pascack Hills) with five seconds remaining to go into the locker room with a 37-18 advantage.
 
The Bloodhounds managed to outscore the Pioneers in the second half, but not before William Paterson managed to put the game away early in the second half. The Pioneers led by as much as 22 in the opening minutes of the second half.
 
The Bloodhounds managed to narrow the deficit but failed to mount a serious rally. With William Paterson still up by 21, John Jay closed out the final four minutes on a 12-4 run to narrow the margin to 13 which would prove to be as close as John Jay would get.
 
Nasira Johnson (Newark, NJ/ West Side) paced John Jay with 15 points. Melissa Escalera (Bronx, NY/ Adali E Stevenson) contributed with 11 to go a long with 10 rebounds, while Lashannen Hogue (Yonkers, NY/ Roosevelt) had 10 points, three blocks, five assists, five steals, and a game-high 17 rebounds.
 
Lucila Custis (Roselle, NJ/ Abraham Clark) paced William Paterson with 18 points, while Michelle Pellichero (Milltown, NJ/ Bishop Ahr) contributed 10 and a game-high five steals. Melissa Moore (East Orange, NJ/ North Bergan) grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds for the Pioneers.
 
The Bloodhounds were held to a season low 24 percent shooting from the floor, including 15 percent in the first half.
 
John Jay will return to action on Fri. Dec. 1 against St. Joseph’s-Vermont in the St. Joseph’s-Maine tournament at 7 p.m.
