Bloodhounds Knock Out Fighting Saints

Standish, ME --- The John Jay women's basketball team never trailed and led by as much as 24 as the Bloodhounds defeated St. Joseph's-Vermont 66-49 in day one of the Merry Monk Classic hosted by St. Joseph's-Maine.

John Jay was led in scoring by Nasira Johnson (Newark, NJ/ West Side) as she poured in a season-high 17 points on 7-for-15 shooting. She also handed out five assists in the win.

Fellow teammates Mahogany Payne (Columbia, SC/ Columbia) and Lashannen Hogue (Yonkers, NY/ Roosevelt) chipped in with 12 points a piece in the win, while Melissa Escalera (Bronx, NY/ Adali E Stevenson) had 11 as John Jay earned their first win outside the Doghouse this season.

Payne shot 5-for-9 from the field, while Hogue was 6-for-11 while grabbing a team-high 13 rebounds in the win. She and Escalera also recorded six steals a piece in the contest.

The Bloodhounds led by eight at halftime, 28-20, capped by a Payne jumper with four seconds remaining.

John Jay then used a 17-4 run to start the second half to turn their lead into a route. The Bloodhounds led by 24 twice in the second half before claiming the 17 point victory.

John Jay will return to action on Sat. Dec. 2 against Univ. of Maine-Presque Isle in day two of the tournament at 12:00 p.m.
