Bloodhounds Late Rally Falls Short at Hunter

New York, N.Y.- The John Jay men's basketball team fell to Hunter College 72-64 at the Hunter College Sportsplex on Thursday evening.

The Bloodhounds were led by Matt Collins (Glendale, NY/ Christ the King) with a team-high 13 points. Fellow teammates Robert Pierce (Far Rockaway, NY/ Benjamin Cardozo), Godfrey Mascall (Brooklyn, NY/ Paul Roberson), and Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY/ Alfred E Smith) each chipped in with nine points a piece as John Jay falls to 1-8 (0-2 CUNYAC) on the season.

John Jay fell behind by 11 points early in the contest but battled back and took a brief lead (25-23 with 4:12 remaining) before going into halftime with a 32-27 deficit.

The host Hawks took control in the second half however. And after the Bloodhounds got to within two in the opening seconds, Hunter would outscore John Jay 25-7 over the next 10 minutes to take a 57-37 lead.

But John Jay would go on a 15-2 run to get back in the game as they trailed 59-52 with just over four minutes remaining.

Hunter would go back up by 11 (65-54 with 2:08 to play). But John Jay battled back and went on a 7-1 run behind a three point field goal and two-point field goal by Emilio Gomez (Moca, Dominican Republic/ William H Taft) and a field goal by Collins to get to within 66-61 with 49 seconds remaining.

John Jay would get the lead to as low as four on a field goal by Pierce in the closing seconds, but no closer as John Jay's comeback falls short.

The Bloodhounds will return to action on Sat. Dec. 9 against SUNY New Paltz at the Doghouse at 2 p.m.
