New York, N.Y. — Playing in their season opener the John Jay College of Criminal Justice women’s volleyball team fell to SUNY Old Westbury in three straight (30-28, 30-20, and 30-16) on Saturday afternoon.
In the first match the Bloodhounds led most of the way, and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. They led by as much as four (6-2) early in the contest. The match would go back and forth the rest of the way, but with John Jay trailing 29-28, the Bloodhounds committed a costly ball handling error to give the visiting Panthers the win.
In the next two matches the Panthers led most of the way, and maintained a double-digit lead for the latter part of the two contests en route to victory.
Sara Altamirano (Bronx, NY/ John F. Kennedy) led the way for the Bloodhounds in a losing cause as she recorded nine kills and three service aces. Fellow teammate Jennifer Tiburcio (New York, NY/ Louis D. Brandeis) slapped five kills as well as three service aces, and shoveled up four digs as John Jay falls to 0-1 on the season.
Jennifer Gonzalez (Bronx, NY/ Jane Addams Vocational) and Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY/ Brentwood) also dug up four digs a piece in the loss.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Sept. 6 when they host Montclair State at 6 p.m.
