New York, N.Y. — The John Jay women’s volleyball team lost 3-1 (30-14, 30-20, 23-30, 14-30) to Western Connecticut State at the Doghouse on Thursday evening.
After losing the first two matches, the Bloodhounds roared back to take game three. John Jay jumped out to an 11-4 lead. But the visiting Colonials rallied back and claimed the lead momentarily (18-17). The Bloodhounds then went on a spurt and took the lead for good. And with John Jay already leading 24-23, they took the next six points for the win.
But that would be as close as John Jay would get as Western Connecticut opened up game four on a 6-2 spurt and never looked back en route to win.
Sara Altamirano (Bronx, NY/ John F. Kennedy) led the way with 11 kills for the Bloodhounds. She also contributed with seven assists and two service aces in the loss. Fellow teammate Jennifer Tiburcio (New York, NY/ Louis D. Brandeis) had five kills as John Jay fell to 2-6 on the season.
Gretchen Olson (Marlborough, CT/ RHAM) led the way for Western Connecticut with nine kills (no errors) and a .562 attack percentage, while Heather Keogh (Monroe, CT/ Masuk) had nine kills and 10 digs.
John Jay will return to action on Sat. Sept. 23 for a quad match at Farleigh Dickinson University- Florham starting at 1 p.m.
