New York, NY –  The John Jay men’s basketball team’s mini two game win streak came to an end on Monday night as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Rutgers-Newark University, 61-47, at the Doghouse on Monday evening.

The Bloodhounds now stand at 5-15 on the season, while Rutgers-Newark improves to 13-4.

Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY/ Alfred E Smith) was the lone Bloodhound to break the double-digit scoring mark as he paced John Jay with a team and game-high 15 points. He also pulled down six rebounds for John Jay. Godfrey Mascall (Brooklyn, NY/ Paul Roberson), who was named conference player of the week earlier in the day was the Bloodhounds next highest scorer, contributing with seven and a game-high six assists.

After a low scoring tight first half that saw nine lead changes and four ties, the Bloodhounds took the lead at the buzzer on a lay-up by Pierce to go into the locker room with a 25-24 lead.

The Bloodhounds shot 27 percent (10-for-37) through the first 20 minutes of basketball, but had the lead with much thanks to a rebounding edge on the offensive end as John Jay outrebounded the Scarlet Raiders 14-2 in offensive rebounding in the first half. The Bloodhounds also earned 12 second chance points to Rutgers-Newark’s two.

John Jay had a 29-26 lead two minutes into the second half. But Rutgers-Newark would go on a 18-2 run to grab a 44-31 lead and take control of the game. The Bloodhounds committed 10 turnovers in the second half (seven of which came during Rutgers-Newark’s game changing run).

John Jay would get the lead to within 10 on several occasions but never closer as Rutgers-Newark held the Bloodhounds at arms length distance the rest of the way en route to victory.

John Jay will return to action on Wed. Jan. 24 against Baruch College, 7 p.m. at the Doghouse.
