Women's Volleyball Blows Storms Past Rutgers-Newark

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s volleyball closed out its tri match with as win as the Bloodhounds defeated Rutgers-Newark 3-1 (30-27, 25-30, 30-26, 30-22) on Saturday. With the win the Bloodhounds improve to 8-13 (3-4 CUNYAC) this season.
 
The Bloodhounds went back and forth with the Scarlet Raiders in the opening match. Rutgers-Newark opened play with a 3-0 spurt, before John Jay answered with a 3-0 rally of its own.
 
The two teams continued to go nip and tuck through the first half of the game that saw seven ties through the first 30 points (15-15).
 
But the Bloodhounds rallied off three straight behind the servicing of Jennifer Gonzalez (Bronx, NY / Jane Addams Vocational), who had six kills, four service aces, and 10 digs, to grab a three point lead. But the Scarlet Raiders hung around and tied the game at 25 before eventually taking a 27-26 lead late in the contest.
 
But John Jay rallied off the final four points, which included two aces from Gonzalez.
 
After Rutgers-Newark tied the match in the second game, John Jay stormed out with a 14-5 lead and never trailed en rout to taking a 2-1 lead. Rutgers-Newark got to within two (27-25) on a service ace by Crystal Navarro (Passaic, NJ / Passaic) who had four aces and five kills.
 
But John Jay ended the game with a 3-1 spurt to win.
 
The Bloodhounds roared out from the opening whistle in the fourth game and led throughout. John Jay led 9-2 early and led by as much as nine (13-4) early in the game, capped by a service ace by Erica Lee (New York, NY / Seward Park) who had 21 assists and seven digs to go along with the service ace.
 
Rutgers-Newark rallied and got to within two at 18-16 after Loretta Fitzgibbons (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ / Hasbrouck Heights) put home a service ace. The freshman recorded six kills in the match for the Scarlet Raiders.
 
But John Jay spurted away one more time with an 8-2 rally to grab a comfortable lead and march to victory.
 
Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY / Brentwood) led the Bloodhounds with eight kills, 18 digs, and two service aces.
 
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Oct. 16 against the College of Staten Island 7 p.m. at St. John Villa Academy High School.
