Women's Volleyball Loses First Match of Tri Match to USMMA

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s volleyball team lost in three straight in the opening match of a tri match losing in three straight to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) on Saturday. The Bloodhounds were defeated by scores of 30-14, 30-17, and 30-27.
 
John Jay was paced by Sara Altamirano (Bronx, NY / John F. Kennedy) who had a team-high 11 kills and a game-high 17 digs. Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY / Brentwood) added five kills in the match to go along with 12 digs and a team-high three service aces.
 
Erica Lee (New York, NY / Seward Park) had a career-high 21 assists and added three digs.
 
The Bloodhounds raced out of the gate and led by as much as six in the first game. They had a 12-6 lead before the Mariners roared back with 15 straight rally points to take a 21-12 lead en route to victory.
 
In the second game USMMA led from the opening whistle and never trailed.
 
USMMA opened the third game with an eight point rally to take a commanding lead. But John Jay answered by scoring six of the next seven points to narrow the deficit to 10-6.
 
The Mariners went back up and reestablished a six point lead at 15-9 before John Jay countered with a 9-2 rally, including a 6-0 spurt, to even the match at 17 behind the service of Medina who recorded two service aces during that stretch.
 
The Bloodhounds eventually grabbed the lead and led by as much as three (23-20) capped on a kill by Altamirano.
 
But USMMA reclaimed the lead at 25-24 and held on from there.
