New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s volleyball team lost in three straight at home on Thursday as the Bloodhounds fell to William Paterson (30-14, 30-25, and 30-22) in non-league action. John Jay now stands at 8-15 (3-5 CUNYAC).
John Jay fell behind early in the opening set and never had a lead. The visiting Pioneers scored the first two points of the game, and with William Paterson up 3-2, they rallied off seven straight to take a 10-2 lead behind the servicing of Tamara Miller (Maplewood, NJ / Columbia), who had six service aces on the evening, four of which came during the rally, including three consecutive at one point.
The Bloodhounds spotted the Pioneers a 3-0 lead early in the second game. But John Jay went on a 5-1 spurt to grab a 5-4 lead. Both teams went nip and tuck most of the way from there. John Jay built a lead as big as four (14-10) midway through the game. But William Paterson inched away and eventually reclaimed the lead (19-18) before both teams traded points from there.
John Jay’s latest lead was 21-20, which they took on a kill by Sara Altamirano (Bronx, NY / John F. Kennedy), who had nine kills and 12 digs on the evening.
With the score even at 22, William Paterson rallied off seven straight to take a 29-22 advantage before winning the set to go up 2-0.
William Paterson raced out to a 7-3 lead early in the third game and would not relinquish its advantage. The Pioneers then used a nine point rally to take a 9-6 lead and turn it into a 12 point margin at 18-6.
John Jay narrowed the deficit to as little as seven. The Bloodhounds, down 23-10, rallied seven of the next eight points to make the score 24-17. But John Jay would get no closer. William Paterson went back up by 10 (28-18) before securing the match.
Anjanette Perez (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) recorded 22 assists for John Jay, while Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY / Brentwood) had 11 digs. Jennifer Gonzalez (Bronx, NY / Jane Addams Vocational) had a team-high 10 kills for John Jay.
Kelly Helfrich (Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) led William Paterson with 11 kills.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Oct. 20 at the St. Joseph’s-Patchogue CUNYAC/Skyline Crossover tournament. The Bloodhounds will face the host school, SUNY Old Westbury and Farmingdale State, starting at 10 a.m.
