Women's Volleyball Loses in Five

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s volleyball team lost in five on Tuesday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Lehman College in a match at the Doghouse. John Jay lost by scores of 26-30, 30-27, 25-30, 30-22, and 15-13, as the Bloodhounds are now 6-11 (2-3 CUNYAC) on the season.
 
The Bloodhounds came out with aggression from the opening whistle. With a packed crowd in the Doghouse of over 200 fans behind them, John Jay came out smoking and took a 10-0 lead to start the match, behind the service of Anjanette Perez (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) who had a career-high 42 assists, along with two service aces and six digs.
 
But visiting Lightning bounced back and rallied off the next eight points to get back in the contest. John Jay managed to keep a small lead and led by as much as six midway through the first game.
 
The Bloodhounds still led by six (22-16) before Lehman mounted another rally. 9-0 to take a 25-22 lead behind the service of Nicole Petralia (Bronx, NY / Cardinal Spellman) who had five services aces, three of which came during the rally.
 
After a John Jay time out the Bloodhounds outscored Lehman 8-1 to win the first set.
 
In the second set the two teams went nip and tuck with neither team leading by more than four. The Bloodhounds had the early advantage and led through the first nine points. But Lehman, down 9-8, scored six of the next seven points to grab a 14-10 advantage. The Bloodhounds then mounted its own rally and reclaimed the lead with a 6-0 rally to take a 16-14 lead, behind the service of Jennifer Gonzalez (Bronx, NY / Jane Addams Vocational) who had 14 kills and 12 digs on the night.
 
But Lehman, down 17-16, scored six of the next seven points to lead 22-18. John Jay went back ahead scoring eight of the next 11 points, but the Lightning closed out the match outscoring the Bloodhounds 5-1 to claim the 30-27 win and even the match at 1-1.
 
After trailing for the first five points, John Jay went on a five point rally to take a 9-5 lead and the Bloodhounds led throughout the match to take a 2-1 lead. The Lightning got to within one on several occasions, but never over the hump as John Jay prevailed.
 
Lehman got even in the fourth set overcoming a seven point deficit early in the match. The Bloodhounds catapulted out to a 12-4 lead early on. But Lehman rallied back outscoring John Jay 9-1 to even the match at 13. And down 14-13 Lehman used a 3-0 rally to take a 16-14 lead and never relinquished the lead en route to a 30-22 win to force a deciding match.
 
In the fifth set the Lightning took a 4-0 lead and led from start to finish. John Jay trailed by as much as six (7-1) early on before rallying off four straight points to narrow the deficit to 7-5. But Lehman rallied off four points of their own and led 11-5.
 
Lehman still led 14-10 before John Jay mounted one last rally. Behind the service of Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY / Brentwood), who had eight kills and 17 digs, the Bloodhounds narrowed the deficit to one. Gonzalez nailed a kill, and that was followed by a ball handling error and attacking error by Carry Em (Bronx, NY / Health Professions) to get the Bloodhounds within one. But Petralia recorded the final kill of the contest to give Lehman the narrow win.
 
The Bloodhounds recorded a season-high 53 kills in the match, more than double of Lehman, who had 27. John Jay had 80 digs, and were led by Sara Altamirano (Bronx, NY / John F. Kennedy) who had 25 and 18 kills.
 
Lehman was led by Yohanna Sufran (Manhattan, NY / Washington Irving) with 15 kills and 27 digs.
 
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Oct. 8 for a CUNYAC multi-match at York College. John Jay will face Lehman at 9 a.m. before batting York at 11 a.m.
