New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s volleyball team closed out its 2007 home and conference regular season schedule with a win as the Bloodhounds defeated Brooklyn College in four games on Tuesday evening. John Jay defeated Brooklyn by scores of 22-30, 30-11, 30-17, and 30-21 as the Bloodhounds now stand at 10-17 (4-5 CUNYAC) on the season.
The visiting Bridges got first run on the Bloodhounds as they never trailed in the opening game. With the first game tied at six early on the Bridges rallied off eight consecutive points to take a 14-6 lead behind the servicing of Leidy Guzman (Brooklyn, NY / Humanities) who had two service aces, both of which came during the rally.
Brooklyn increased its lead to as much as 12 (22-10) before John Jay rallied off five straight to narrow the deficit to 22-15 behind the servicing of senior outside hitter Sara Altamirano (Bronx, NY / John F. Kennedy) who had 24 kills, six service aces, and 12 digs.
But the Bridges would go back up by double digits and John Jay would get no closer as Brooklyn took a 1-0 lead.
The Bloodhounds then raced out to an 8-0 lead to start the second game and John Jay was never threatened. John Jay increased its lead to as much as 19 before eventually winning by the same margin.
The third game saw both teams trade points through the early stages of the set. But John Jay gradually increased the lead midway though. And with the score tied at seven the Bloodhounds rallied off four straight to take an 11-7 advantage and never trailed again. The route came when John Jay rallied off eight straight to take a 25-13 lead late in the contest behind Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY / Brentwood) servicing. For the game Medina had three kills, five service aces, and 12 digs.
In the deciding game John Jay rallied out to a 9-4 lead and led the rest of the way. Brooklyn got the deficit to within one on two occasions (9-8 and 14-13), but John Jay scored six of the next seven points to grab a 20-14 lead and cruise home from there.
Erica Lee (New York, NY / Seward Park) had 37 assists in the win for John Jay, who secured the No. 6 seed for next week’s conference tournament.
John Jay returns to action this Friday and Saturday at the St. Mary’s tournament starting with a match against Eastern Mennonite Friday evening at 4 p.m.
