Wayne, N.J.— The John Jay men’s basketball team lost on the road on Wednesday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by William Paterson University, 69-58, ending their winning streak at three games. The Bloodhounds now stand at 3-2 on the season.
Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY / Alfred E. Smith), who knocked in 12 points, nailed a three point field goal in the game’s opening possession to grab the initial lead.
But the host Pioneers went on a 9-0 run from there to take a 9-3 lead and William Paterson led the rest of the contest from there.
William Paterson took its biggest lead of the first half, 13, on a three point field goal, one of 10 by the Pioneers in the contest, with four seconds remaining and went into halftime up 34-21.
John Jay cut into the lead in the second half, and narrowed the deficit to as little as eight, most recent came on a pair of free throws by Alex Valerio (Flushing, NY / Francis Lewis) to make the score 53-45 with 9:09 to play. Valerio had a team-high 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds in the contest.
But William Paterson went on a game sealing13-2 run from there to take a 66-47 lead with 4:17 to play.
The Bloodhounds never got the deficit back to within single digits, but went on a 7-0 run to get the deficit down to 12 on a Mason jumper at the 1:35 mark. But the Pioneers kept the Bloodhounds at arms length distance the rest of the way as John Jay loses by double figures for the first time this season.
