Newark, N.J.— The John Jay men’s basketball team lost on the road on Saturday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Rutgers-Newark University 71-42 at Rutgers-Newark’s Golden Dome. The loss leaves John Jay at 3-3 on the season.
The host Scarlet-Raiders led start to finish and jumped out to an 8-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest.
Rutgers-Newark gradually increased its lead in the first half and ended the stanza on an 8-0 run over the final 1:39 and led 35-10 at the break.
John Jay fell behind by as much as 31 early in the second half and trailed 47-16 after five minutes gone by before the Bloodhounds cut into the lead. John Jay used a 13-2 run over the next 5:30 to narrow the deficit to 20 (49-29) capped by a pair of free throws by Emilio Gomez (Moca, Dominican Republic / William Taft).
But John Jay would get no closer as Rutgers-Newark went on a 9-1 run to go back up by 28 with 6:34 to play and the Bloodhounds never had another run as they suffer their first losing streak of the season.
Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY / Hicksville) paced the Bloodhounds with 21 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Dec. 4 for a home contest with Baruch College, the 2007-08 conference opener, at 7 p.m.
